McKinney Boyd closed its appearance at the Allen-hosted Texas Open on Saturday by splitting four matches and losing to Plano Senior (25-15, 25-16) in the silver-bracket finals. The Lady Broncos finished sixth overall.
After opening the tournament with a 4-1 run Friday and sweeping pool play to land in the championship bracket, the Lady Broncos beat new district rival Allen (25-18, 25-22) and lost to Lovejoy (25-16, 25-17) to move to the silver bracket, where they exacted revenge against Flower Mound with a two-set sweep (25-19, 25-23). Flower Mound swept Boyd on Tuesday in its first home match of the season.
The win against Flower Mound set up Boyd’s match with Plano, another new district foe. Every team in the new-look District 10-5A – Boyd, Allen, Plano, Plano East, Plano West and McKinney – played in the tournament.
The Lady Broncos will be back in action Tuesday when they host Bishop Lynch at 6:30 p.m.
McKinney closed its Texas Open appearance in the challenger bracket, where it lost to Creekview (26-28, 25-21, 25-21) and swept Lake Highlands (25-21, 25-22) and Lakeridge (25-19, 25-20) to land in the consolation championship. The Lionettes lost to Rockwall (25-20, 25-23) in the championship match to finish 26th overall.
McKinney put together a 3-5 run at the tournament to move to 9-7 on the season.
The Lionettes will return courtside Tuesday when they travel to Frisco Wakeland for a 6:30 p.m. match.
McKinney North spent its weekend closing a 4-3 run at the Lewisville ISD tournament. The Lady Bulldogs won a marathon, five-set match against Denton Guyer (25-21, 18-25, 25-21, 20-25, 15-11) before losing to Frisco (19-25, 21-25, 15-25) and Lewisville (19-25, 25-16, 16-25, 19-25) in their final two matches.
The Lady Bulldogs finished in fourth place in the tournament’s gold division and libero Lexey Wilson was selected for the all-tournament team.
North is now 7-9 on the season.
The Lady Bulldogs will be back in action Tuesday when they host Carrollton Newman Smith at 6:30 p.m.
