When students at the McKinney Independent School District's 31 campuses show up Monday morning for the first day of the 2012-2013 school year, many will notice significant changes.

Major improvements under way this year are at McKinney High School and Faubion Middle School, while other less significant, but still important construction is under way at several other schools.

About 188,000 square feet is being added to the existing McKinney High building. The majority of the interior of the school is being renovated to make way for new classrooms and a more spacious commons area, and parking lots have been added and redesigned there and at Faubion.

McKinney High additions are to accommodate 3,000 students, whom are expected at the school within the next few years. About 2,300 students are expected there this year.

At Faubion, construction is under way to accommodate 1,500 students. New spaces are being added for the library and fine arts, and athletic areas are being updated.

Turf has been replaced at Ron Poe Stadium and at McKinney North High School. Turf at McKinney High will be replaced this spring.

McKinney High additions and renovations are costing more than $46 million, and those at Faubion are costing $17 million. All funds are from the $191 million bond package approved by voters in May 2011.

In addition to improvements at McKinney High and Faubion, additions are being completed at Reuben Johnson Elementary, Malvern Elementary, Dowell Middle School and McKinney North High School.

All 31 campuses are expected to eventually benefit from the bond package approved last year.
