Swim-in Cinema makes a splash: Rosemeade Aquatic Complex offers family fun on a budget

Published: Thursday, July 26, 2012 4:33 PM CDT
On July 27, the Rosemeade Rainforest Aquatic Complex is hosting its Swim-in Cinema event to families and friends across North Texas looking for some summer fun.

For the past eight years, Swim-in Cinema events have been held at the Rosemeade Aquatic Complex to large crowds of Carrollton residents. During the event, guests can swim in the complex's main pool section while watching a family-friendly film.

According to its website, the complex includes a Rainforest section and a main pool section. The Rainforest section of the complex includes an entry pool, water cannons, water slides and a 200-foot lazy river.

The main pool section features a 50 meter pool, a separate diving well and a training pool. The facility also offers picnic tables, lounge chairs and a concession stand, where guests can purchase food and drinks during the event.

This year, the event is back and is offering something different. The complex always chooses a family-friendly film that is somewhat recent for guests to view. In the past, the Aquatic Complex has always chosen an animated movie to show, such as "Finding Nemo," "Happy Feet," "Despicable Me" and "Shrek." This year, they have decided to shift gears and show a film that they think will appeal to all ages.

"This year we decided to go a different route and pick 'Night at the Museum,'" said Kim Bybee, athletic supervisor for the parks and recreation department. "It's a fun movie that we think both kids and adults will enjoy."

The event draws crowds of 250 to 300 people each year. Bybee says it's the combination of a good movie in a unique atmosphere that brings such large crowds.

"It's a different kind of event," she said. "We feel like it's unique since we are showing a movie in a setting where you would not expect to watch a movie."

The atmosphere is also what draws people to the event. Guests are welcome to enjoy an open swim until dusk. Then, the complex closes down all of the pools expect the main pool section where the movie will play.

"It is pretty laid back," Bybee said. "We allow everyone to enjoy an open swim until it starts to get dark. Then we close down all of the pools except our main pool where the movie will be playing."

Bybee said the Swim-in Cinema event is a fun community event for families who are on a budget and looking for entertainment.

"Guests can expect a fun atmosphere and a good movie," Bybee said. "It's just a fun, family-friendly, resonably priced, community event."

Swim-in Cinema will show "Night at the Museum" on July 27 at 7:00 p.m. at the Rosemeade Rainforest Aquatic Complex. Guests are welcome to bring snacks, drinks and pool floats to the event. Tickets are $5 for residents, $7 for non-residents and $3 for children between the ages of 4 and 6. Tickets are sold at the event.
