McKinney Boyd got a district preview Friday and Saturday at the Allen-hosted Texas Open. During their 7-2 tournament run, the Lady Broncos won matches against soon-to-be district rivals Allen (25-18, 25-22) and Plano Senior (25-15, 25-16).

The tournament featured the full complement of District 10-5A teams: Allen, Boyd, Plano, Plano East, Plano West and McKinney. Of that group, the Lady Broncos finished the highest, fifth overall, courtesy of their win against Plano in the silver-bracket finals.

After Tuesday's sweep of Bishop Lynch (25-22, 25-19, 25-20), Boyd is now 12-4 on the season.

“Everyone got a lot of playing time [at the tournament],” said Kelly Quinn, Boyd head volleyball coach. “That was the best thing about this tournament, it really was a team win. Everyone got to play, everyone got to contribute and we played great because of it.”

The Lady Broncos opened the tournament by sweeping pool play with wins against John Paul II (18-25, 25-12, 25-15), Rockwall (25-18, 25-18) and Richardson Pearce (25-22, 21-25, 25-20). That performance earned them a spot in the championship bracket, though they lost a crossover match against Colleyville Heritage (25-18, 26-24) to finish play Friday.

That was Boyd's second loss in as many tournament matches against Heritage, who also beat them to end a 5-1 run at the Duncanville Tournament of Champions. The Lady Broncos also finished fifth at that tournament.

Boyd returned Saturday to open bracket play at the Texas Open with its win against Allen. After taking the first set, the Lady Broncos fell behind in the second before rallying from a 16-9 deficit to complete the sweep.

“We definitely came through when we needed to,” Quinn said. “We fought back and that was the best part about that particular match. We learned how to compete and to fight back.”

The Lady Broncos advanced to face Lovejoy, who swept them (25-16, 25-17) in their only other loss of the tournament. The loss shifted them to the silver bracket, where they opened against Flower Mound. That match was a chance at revenge for the Lady Broncos, who were swept by Flower Mound last week in their first home match of the season. They answered back Saturday with a sweep of their own (25-19, 25-23).

The win against Flower Mound set up Boyd's finale against Plano, who finished just behind the Lady Broncos in sixth place. The finishing order of the rest of the district went Allen (10), East (13), West (17) and McKinney (26). Coppell won the tournament with a three-set win against Lovejoy (16-25, 25-23, 30-28),

Boyd senior libero Kaley Seaber earned all-tournament honors.

“She played great,” Quinn said. “She's a coach at heart. She's like having another coach on the court, because she knows where everyone is supposed to be. She's so smart as it is and is such a bright, intelligent kid that it's like having another coach. She's constantly telling people where to go and if they're overlapping to back up. She was really great this past weekend.”

McKinney (9-8 on the season) put together a 3-5 run at the Texas Open. After being swept by Lovejoy, Coronado and Amarillo during pool play, the Lionettes won their crossover match against Eastlake (25-21, 25-23) to draw Creekview in their first match in the challenger bracket. Creekview won a hard-fought match (26-28, 25-21, 25-21), but the Lionettes rallied from there to sweep Lake Highlands (25-21, 25-22) and Lakeridge (25-19, 25-20) and land in the consolation championship, where they lost Rockwall (25-20, 25-23).

McKinney will be back in action Thursday when it opens play at the Frisco ISD Tournament, while Boyd will travel to the Arlington Tournament on Friday.
