Skeeters head into opener against Lake Highlands hoping to build on 2011 season

Who: Mesquite vs. Lake Highlands
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Where: E.H. Hanby Stadium
With 18 returning starters, the Skeeters are poised to accomplish even more this year.
"I think this group has a lot of confidence from last season," Mesquite head coach Robbie Robinson said. "They understand what happened last season doesn't mean anything now, but they know what it takes to be a playoff team."
The road starts on Friday against Lake Highlands, who handed Mesquite a 34-27 loss in last year's opener.
The Skeeters have no shortage of firepower.
Quarterback Alex Cooper threw for 2,471 yards and 21 touchdowns last season and became an effective runner late in the year.
Running back Junior Session rushed for 1,000 yards and 20 touchdowns, while Rashard Higgins averaged nearly 18 yards per catch.
The defense took a hit when defensive back Anthony Canady was injured during 7-on-7 play and is expected to miss much of the season. However, the defense should still be solid in the back, particularly with Chris Thompson and Charles Grant.
Lake Highlands also made the playoffs last season but was thrashed in the bi-district round by Rowlett, 53-14.
The Wildcats return several members of that squad. Quarterback Michael Ketchmark threw for nearly 700 yards last season and Trent Jones was also effective, completing 60 percent of his passes for 485 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions.
Lake Highlands loses the versatile DeVonte Sunwanghen, but does return running back Elbert Landry, who averaged nearly eight yards per carry.
