Local volleyball teams have a rough time at weekend tournaments
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
The good news regarding non-district play in the volleyball season is that it does not affect a team's playoff chances.
However, for most area teams, they are hoping that some rough patches during early-season play will teach lessons for when district play gets started in the next two weeks.
Rowlett and Sachse each took on a tough slate at the Allen Tournament this past weekend.
Rowlett got off to a rough start with a 25-17, 25-11 loss to Plano West and then fell to Bishop Lynch in a 25-18, 25-22 decision.
The Eagles picked up their lone win with a 25-10, 25-21 victory over Lake Highlands before falling to Plano West on Saturday, 25-22, 25-19.
The Mustangs had a similar result as they were also only able to grab one victory in four matches.
Sachse fell to powerhouse Coppell in a 25-12, 25-17 loss and then dropped a 25-18, 25-19 decision to Plano East.
Like Rowlett, the Mustangs defeated Lake Highlands in a 25-11, 25-23 victory but closed the tournament out with a 25-20, 25-17 loss to Allen.
Horn was one of the busiest teams in the area, as they competed in eight matches at the Lewisville/The Colony Tournament, posting a 3-5 record.
The Jaguars played their best at the end of the tournament, winning two of three matches on Saturday.
Horn picked up a 25-9, 25-12, 25-18 victory over Woodrow Wilson and a 27-25, 25-19, 25-14 win against Carrollton Ranchview. They also dropped a 25-15, 25-18, 25-12 decision to Frisco Heritage.
The Jaguars were not as fortunate on the first two days. On Thursday, the lost to both Frisco (25-20, 26-24) and McKinney North (25-11, 25-23).
Horn was able to earn a three-game sweep of Forney on Friday but also fell to both Denton Guyer and The Colony.
North Mesquite was also competing at the Lewisville/The Colony Tournament, where it recorded a 3-5 record.
The Stallions were outlasted by Forney in a three-game loss on Thursday but rebounded with a sweep of Lake Dallas.
North Mesquite then defeated North Forney (23-25, 25-15, 25-23) on Friday before dropping matches against Royse City and Frisco.
The Stallions closed the tournament by defeating Carrollton Newman Smith but losing to Frisco Wakeland and Forney.
Poteet won two of its six matches at the Byron Nelson Trophy Club Tournament. The Pirates posted a 25-21, 25-20 win over Denton Ryan and then defeated the same opponent 25-23, 25-21. Outside of those victories, Poteet came up short against Red Oak, Pearland Dawson, Frisco Liberty and Waco Midway.
Mesquite went 1-3 at the Berkner Lady Ram Tournament.
While the Skeeters were able to earn a 27-25, 21-25, 25-21 victory over Irving Nimitz, they dropped matches to Justin Northwest, Naaman Forest and Richardson.
