Burkhead for Heisman run begins
From Staff Reports
Though his play each week is impactful, Nebraska has added to the Heisman Trophy hype behind senior running back Rex Burkhead by launching the website: rexburkhead22.com.
Burkhead is a Plano Senior alum.
Burkhead enters his senior season at Nebraska with 2,654 career rushing yards, good for 12th in school history. Burkhead, who ran for 1,357 and 15 touchdowns as a junior, could move to No. 2 on the Cornhuskers' all-time chart with another big year.
Burkhead was a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American and academic All-Big Ten pick in 2011. He was also chosen as the 2011-12 Uplifting Athletes Award winner for putting a focus on helping children with rare diseases.
"[Burkhead], to me, is the definition of what a role model is and what a student-athlete should be," said Bo Pelini, Nebraska head coach. "I wouldn't trade him for another player in the country."
Nebraska opened its season Saturday against Southern Miss.
