Mesquite's early onslaught too much for Lake Highlands

Published: Saturday, September 1, 2012 4:42 PM CDT
Friday's season opener between Mesquite and Lake Highlands had all the makings of a shootout in the early going.

But once the Skeeters shifted into a higher gear, the Wildcats could not keep up and the Mesquite defense did the rest in the second half en route to a 27-9 victory at E.H. Hanby Stadium.

This was not a statement game, but the Skeeters do want it to be known that last season's return to the playoffs was no fluke.

Quarterback Alex Cooper was in midseason form, completing better than 90 percent of his passes (20-of-22) for 331 yards and four touchdowns.

Cooper got the scoring started early when his 15-yard touchdown pass to Junior Session gave Mesquite a quick 6-0 lead.

Lake Highlands responded using a big play as Trent Jones threw a 70-yard scoring strike to Tyree Britton to tie the game and briefly took a 9-6 lead on a field goal by Mitchell Henton.

But it was all Skeeters from there.

They regained the advantage when Cooper found Rashard Higgins open for a 59-yard touchdown pass to make it 13-9 at the end of the opening quarter.

Cooper's mastery of the Lake Highlands secondary continued in the second, as he threw a 12-yard scoring strike to Jordan Bracy and a 43-yarder to Dameon Gamblin to push the advantage to 27-9 at halftime.

The Skeeter offense put it in cruise control from there, which they could afford to do because of the way the defense played.

After allowing the nine points early, Mesquite shut out the Wildcats during the final three quarters and finished the game allowing only 214 yards of total offense.
