Aug. 18 proved to be an exciting day on the lake for boaters and jet skiers participating in the eighth annual Jet Ski Adventure and Dinner. Although a round of severe thunderstorms threw a kink into the day's events, the fundraiser managed to collect $26,000 to benefit the Little Elm Area Food Bank as of last Friday, raising more than the previous year.

Enjoying the cooler temperatures, participants on the lake managed to get halfway through three pit-stops to get their game cards stamped before a round of severe thunderstorms reached the area, cutting it short. Before the inclement weather settled in, some were concerned for the sake of the event.

"We're hoping the weather holds because this is their biggest fundraiser event," Tamra Zuber said.

The LEAFB uses the funds from the event to replenish their shelves and sponsor programs such as the Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets and the Kids Eat Free program at the Button Memorial United Methodist Church. The group is entirely volunteer-run and relies solely on donations, fundraisers, corporate grants and canned food drives. It is not affiliated with the North Texas Food Bank.

Later that night at the dinner, the area experienced a power outage for half of the evening, but it did not deter guests from enjoying a barbecue buffet, brownie sundaes and each other's company. Despite the unexpected, and unusual, setbacks, participants still enjoyed their time both on the lake and at the dinner.

"It's a good event for the LEAFB," said Robert Medigovich, who has participated every year.

After dinner, Billy Miller and Tish Anderson were named the winners of the SouthWest Airlines tickets. Jill Sokell won the handmade quilt made by the "Fab Five," which is donated to the event each year. A silent auction was held and items were raffled off, including gift cards, outdoor chairs, gift certificates, cologne, a Scentsy warmer, prints and more.

To conclude the evening, a colorful display of fireworks was shot off over the lake.

"It's a great time for a great cause," Sheryl Thompson said.

Sponsors for the event this year included title sponsor The Tribute, Retractable Technologies, Inc., True Spirit, the Little Elm Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Corporation, Community Waste Disposal and several other individual sponsors.
