Aerial acrobatics fly into Metroplex

Published: Friday, May 11, 2012 3:40 PM CDT
A major airshow, Take to the Skies AirFest, is about to take over the Metroplex during Memorial Day weekend, May 26-27. The event will begin both days at 10 a.m. at Mesquite Metro Airport, 1340 Airport Blvd.

The show will feature a variety of airplanes, helicopters, military aircraft, skydivers, powered parachutes and RC aircraft.

“If it flies we want it there,” said Debby Standefer, representing the air show. “Our main goal is to get young adults interested in aviation. “There will be lots of smoke and action. This is the only air show in the Dallas area.”

Standefer said that aviation can be a positive force in the life of a young adult and can be a way of keeping them out of trouble.

“The pilot’s test is one of the hardest in the world,” Standefer said.

The activities will be almost the same both days of the event, with the exception being a Friday night balloon glow event on May 26 at 8 p.m. This is the fifth year of the airshow but the first time it has been held in the Metroplex. In previous years it was held in the Waxahachie-Midlothian area.

Spanky Gallaway, announcer of the Red Bull Air Races will be announcing the show, as well as flying in it. There will be solo aerobatics, formation flights; Jan Collmer will perform aerobatics in his Extra; the Trojan Phlyers with preform precision formation aerobatic performances in their T28 Trojans. This is the only show in the south where ARC Series Aerobatic Air Racing Challenge is performed. The challenge pits precision teams of two-race through the sky performing technical dare defying feats in a timed competition.

“We are looking forward to bringing lots of people here,” Standefer said. “We think we are going to grow tremendously here. We want to involve as many local businesses and charities as possible.”

The cost to attend the event is $5, with children under six free. For information, visit www.taketotheskiesairfest.com.

“We want the event to be affordable,” Standefer said.
