The Colony PD investigates fatality, closes north access road of Sam Rayburn Parkway between Josey and Plano Parkway

Published: Thursday, September 6, 2012 10:28 AM CDT
The North access road of Sam Rayburn Parkway between Josey and Plano Parkway will be closed to traffic this morning beginning at 10 a.m. as a part of an accident investigation.

At 1:46 a.m. this morning, The Colony Police Department received a 911 call of a motorcycle accident that had just occurred in the 5000 block of S.H. 121 on the service feeder road of the Sam Rayburn Tollway.

The north access road of Sam Rayburn Pkwy between Josey and Plano Parkway will be closed to traffic this afternoon between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. as a part of this investigation. No exit or entry ramps onto Sam Rayburn will be affected. The shopping center at that intersection may be accessed via Josey Lane during the closure.

Darren Brockway, criminal investigations and public information officer for The Colony PD, said the police and fire departments responded to the incident and found an unresponsive man who had wrecked his motorcycle. He was seriously injured and unconscious.

"The male subject was taken to Medical Center of Plano where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival," Brockway said. "The preliminary investigation found that the male subject was driving his motorcycle and struck the back end of a vehicle while both were traveling the same direction. This collision resulted in the motorcycle losing control. The driver of the other vehicle stopped and called 911. The service road was shut down for a few hours while police investigated the accident."

The deceased was indentified at Stephen Herring, 22, of The Colony. The vehicle Herring struck sustained minimal damage. The driver of that vehicle was uninjured and interviewed by police on scene.

"No charges are expected to be filed against that driver," Brockway said. "It is believed that Herring was traveling at a high rate of speed, which is currently considered to be the primary contributing factor for the accident. Herring was also not wearing a helmet. It is unknown if Herring was intoxicated at the time of the accident and that determination will be pending until toxicology results are provided to police."

" The service road is designed to create accidents such as this. When the road was rebuilt they could have added turn lanes into major shopping outlets such as Walmart.

Also, the design of the through traffic is inconsistent from light to ligh. Some intersections only allow two for straight traffic while other intersection allow all three lanes to go straight. Then there is the silly idea of allowing two of the straight lanes to also be turn lanes. The skid marks is all telling how poorly these intersections were designed. "
