On the Right Track: Carroll returns to win column with 63-3 thrashing of Midland
BY Matthew Costa, Staff Writer
SOUTHLAKE -- It came a week later than was desired, but the first football win of 2012 went in the books for Southlake Carroll (1-1) Friday as it blew out the Midland Bulldogs, 63-3.
The game started off perfectly for Carroll, which drove 75-yards in 36 seconds on its opening drive, scoring its first points of the season and setting the tone of the game on a 6-yard run by senior quarterback Kenny Hill.
"The fast start was the key tonight," Hill said. "It just carried us through the entire game. Everybody was so embarrassed about last week that we knew we had to score."
Hill recovered well from last week's struggles, throwing for 300-yards and two touchdowns, along with 56-yards rushing and another two rushing scores.
The Dragons' second drive ended in similar fashion, but it was Hill's arm that put the points on the board. Carroll ran a double-reverse from the 24-yard line that fooled the Bulldogs' defense. Sophomore wide out Ryan Agnew got behind Midland's defense and caught Hill's pass for a 14-0 lead midway through the first. Any thoughts of a Bulldogs' comeback were quickly dashed after a third-down pass was intercepted by Carroll junior defensive back J.B. Copeland, returning it 35 yards for the fourth touchdown of the quarter, resulting in a score of 28-0.
Carroll unleashed any anger it had from last week's shutout loss to Allen on the Bulldogs, scoring 42 points midway through the second quarter after another interception off Midland quarterback Connor Beck.
Ezzard converted the turnover, driving in his second score from 1-yard out. Ezzard gained 89 yards on nine carries in the first half, helping Carroll gain 438 total yards and 49 points.
Carroll's defense was up to the task in the first 24 minutes as well, holding the Bulldogs' offense to 89 yards and eight first downs as opposed to the Dragons' 23.
"I thought our defensive line played great," said Hal Wasson, Carroll head coach. "In fact, I thought we played well last week, we just didn't create plays the way we did tonight."
The Dragons called off the dogs early in the second half, bringing in Agnew as a replacement for Hill. Agnew joined in the scoring festivities, turning another Beck interception into Carroll's eighth touchdown by rushing 16 yards to the end zone. Agnew proved to be an effective all-around weapon for the Dragons, earning a touchdown on the ground, through the air and receiving, while contributing a combined 223 yards.
"This was a great way for our new guys to get some experience," Wasson said. "We need a lot of our young players to step up this year and they did tonight."
Midland's first chance for points came in the third as Dragons junior receiver Joe Heineman fumbled a catch the Bulldogs' defense ran back to Carroll's 11-yard line. The defense held the Bulldogs to a 26-yard field goal, ending the shutout with nine minutes to play.
Agnew finalized the score with a 46-yard completion to sophomore receiver Ryan McGiboney as Carroll put the finishing touches on an impressive night and 63-3 win.
Carroll will hope to carry this momentum forward as the Dragons return to the site of their 2011 Class 5A State Championship, Cowboys Stadium, Friday at 7 p.m. against Temple.
