Walkabout for Autism Saturday at Andy Brown East

The eighth-annual Walkabout for Autism, sponsored by the Brent Woodall Foundation (BWF) of Irving, is scheduled for this coming Saturday, Sept. 23, at Andy Brown East Park, located at 260 Parkway Boulevard in Coppell.
Erin Alcorn, BWF administrative assistant, said, "The Walkabout for Autism is a family fun fundraising event. Anyone can participate, no matter what age or ability. Registration begins at 8 a.m. during which all participants gather together before the festivities begin to visit various booths which will have information about the BWF."
The Walkabout and Velocity Fitness Challenge begins at 9 a.m. Participants can walk around the lakes at the park for as long as they want and as hard or as leisurely as the prefer. The Fitness Challenge is a new event this year made possible by Velocity Sports Performance.
The event will also feature a kid zone, which will have a bounce house, bike rodeo, face painting and other activities. Assistant therapists will be on hand to assist children.
"The Walkabout is a come-and-go event, meant to support autism awareness and help the BWF continue to provide its services to families affected by autism," Alcorn said. "The Walkabout for Autism is our largest fundraising event of the year. All monies raised go directly to support the programs provided by the BWF.
The registration fee is $25 for adults and $10 for children, with discounts for groups of seven people or more.
"A total of 85 children are currently receiving therapy from the BWF," Alcorn said. "Several of our graduates and their families will attend the event."
The event is made possible through the contributions of several businesses and individuals in the area.
"Almost all materials used at the event, from raffle prizes to the bounce house to the ice for drinks were donated for the Walkabout," Alcorn said.

The program was created by Tracy Pierce Bender in memory of her husband who died in the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
"The BWF offers free parent training to empower parents and guardians with the tools they need to help their own children," Alcorn said. "It also provides potentially expensive therapy for children for little or no cost. There is also a no wait list."
BWF also offers a pre-school readiness program (PREP) and Woodallkids Outreach remote control services.
"These programs are very valuable in helping children with autism and other developmental disabilities in our community and around the world," Alcorn said.
