Homecoming couldn't have gone any better for McKinney Boyd running back Bryan Driskell.
The senior held court by rushing for 220 yards and scoring three touchdowns in the first half of a 44-7 win against Rockwall, and after being named homecoming king at the break, he rested on a job well done.
In the process, he hit 4,030 career rushing yards to set a new school record.
He played really well, said Don Drake, Boyd head coach. I thought our offensive line did a great job opening some running lanes for him, and Bryan does what Bryan does. He's a great kid and he played well. Add his punt return and that's two special teams scores in back-to-back weeks, and those things are huge.
After getting their first win with a narrow 31-21 victory against Garland last week, the Broncos (2-2) made a much more emphatic statement Friday as their offense and defense worked in perfect harmony to put the game away early.
Rockwall (1-3) turned the ball over on three consecutive drives to open the game and the Broncos responded by scoring each time, starting with a 72-yard touchdown rush from Driskell. That run came on Boyd's first play from scrimmage and followed an interception by senior defensive back Daylon Markham.
Rockwall's next two drives followed the same script as Boyd turned a pair of recovered fumbles into points on a 39-yard field goal from senior kicker Jared Symmank and a 31-yard fumble return for a touchdown by senior defensive back Taylor Fann.
[Rockwall] moved the ball some, but we were able to create some turnovers, which were big, Drake said. Then we were able to capitalize on those turnovers, which is the second part of that piece. You've got to create them, but you've got to put points on the board after you create them, and we were able to do that as well to open up that lead in the first half. I was proud to see that.
The Broncos closed their 24-point first quarter and opened the second with touchdowns from Driskell, who scored on back-to-back touches when he ran in a 33-yard score and returned a subsequent punt for a 62-yard touchdown.
With the ground game working at such a high level, the Broncos were able to add a quality passing attack to the mix as junior quarterback Curtis Ladd threw for 143 yards and a touchdown on 10-of-16 passing (63 percent) in his best performance of the season. His favorite target was sophomore wide out Dedrick Scrivens, who caught eight passes for 106 yards and played at running back in the second half.
I thought [Scrivens] really had a great game, Drake said. He made some huge plays for us offensively, and Curtis threw the ball well. Overall, I thought we did a pretty good job.
The 16-yard touchdown reception was pulled in by senior tight end Nick Creedon at the close of the second quarter to put the Broncos up, 38-0, at the break and set the stage for an influx of backup players in the second half.
The Broncos offense totaled 457 yards on the night. Their final score came on a 3-yard touchdown rush from senior running back Kalvon Howard, who had 10 carries for 43 yards, to open the third quarter.
Boyd paired its highest scoring game of the season with its best defensive performance. That string of first-quarter turnovers contributed to the five total four recovered fumbles and an interception the Broncos forced.
They also held Rockwall to 297 total yards and just 87 yards through the air on 9-of-19 passing (47 percent), though a good chunk of that yardage came on a 74-yard touchdown run from running back Zach Berryman in garbage time. Berryman ran for 175 yards on 15 carries as the most effective piece of Rockwall's offense.
I thought the defense played great, Drake said. I've said the same thing every week. Those kids battle, they play hard and they do a good job. I was proud to see the same performance out of them tonight.
After opening the season with consecutive losses 38-20 against Mesquite Horn and 31-6 against Coppell the Broncos have evened their record by beating Garland and Rockwall. They'll look to tilt further into the win column next week when they travel to Lewisville.
The matchup holds an extra level of intrigue given that Lewisville opened the season with a 14-7 loss to Plano Senior, one of Boyd's new district rivals. How they perform against the Farmers could provide some early insight into where they stack up in 10-5A.
Winning is always good, no matter how you get it, Drake said, but it was nice to be able to reward some of the other kids with some playing time tonight. Fortunately for us, we got out healthy and we got out with a victory and now we have to get back to work on Monday and get ready for the next one.
