Southridge students visit the 'Four Corners'

In an effort to create a safe, nurturing and flexible learning environment, Southridge Elementary teachers Jerry Green and Sandi Rockne led their fifth-grade students to the "four corners."
For this "get to know you" activity, they divided students in to groups to explore the "four corners" of their classroom.
In one corner, students learned the names of their teammates. In another, they drew pictures of four items they all had in common. In the third corner, each student drew a symbol that is unique to them and in the fourth corner, they wrote goals they plan to work on during the 2012-13 school year. When they completed their tour of the "four corners", students shared their newfound knowledge to the rest of the class.
The objective was to get students to collaborate and work as a team. In the process, they got to know each other, discovered some of the things they had in common, and also learned they were all unique. This set the stage for an outstanding year of growth and learning for these students.
"It was evident we were successful," Green said. "The students' faces told us they really enjoyed the activity."
