By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
Sunnyvale head coach John Settle said that he wants his team to take advantage of every week.
The Raider defense took that to heart on Friday as they forced seven turnovers to key a 37-7 victory over Life High Oak Cliff at Raider Stadium.
Sunnyvale improved to 2-0 on the season with the win.
The Raiders actually found themselves down 7-0 early in the game before they got going.
Ryan Cottingame threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Josh Quinn, one of three hook-ups for that duo on the night, and Daniel Mullican added a 7-yard touchdown run to take a 14-7 lead.
Sunnyvale took control in the second quarter. Abdul Khalaf had a 36-yard touchdown run and the special teams then chipped in by blocking a punt out of the back of the end zone to push the advantage to 23-7.
The Raiders then went back to the air, as Quinn caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from Cottingame to make it 30-7 at halftime.
Sunnyvale tacked on one insurance score in the third quarter, as Cottingame threw a 30-yard scoring strike to Quinn to provide the final margin.
Raiders take on Italy on Friday
Sunnyvale is trying to build momentum for the district season and that quest continues on Friday when it plays its first road game at Italy.
The Raiders have moved the ball well in the first two games. First-year starter Ryan Cottingame has been effective through the air, completing 24-of-48 passes for 344 yards and five touchdowns.
Josh Quinn has been the primary option in the receiving game with nine catches for 158 yards and four scores.
Abdul Khalif has rushed for 194 yards through the first two games, while two-way player Devin DeLeon is also a factor in the rushing attack.
Italy got off to a good start to the season with a 41-14 win over Maypearl but it looking to bounce back from a 64-36 loss to Malakoff last week.
