Sunnyvale steamrolls Maypearl to run its perfect record to 4-0

Published: Thursday, September 27, 2012 5:10 PM CDT
Sunnyvale could not have asked for a better springboard into District 6-2A play on Friday.

The Raiders dominated on both sides of the line of scrimmage as they routed Maypearl for a 52-7 victory to improve to 4-0 on the season.

Sunnyvale will put that perfect record on the line this week with their Homecoming game and district opener against Farmersville on Friday night at Raider Stadium.

The Raiders held Maypearl to 173 total yards and forced five turnovers, the first of which was an interception by Stephen Kirven that was returned 60 yards for a touchdown to give them an early 7-0 lead.

Later in the first quarter, Josh Quinn, the team's leading receiver, showed off his versatility by throwing a 20-yard touchdown pass to Connor Mears to push the advantage to 14-0.

Sunnyvale was just getting warmed up, as it blew the game open in the second quarter.

Quinn caught touchdown passes of five and 38 yards from Ryan Cottingame and Cottingame then scored on a short touchdown run on a quarterback keeper to push the advantage to 35-0 at halftime.

Maypearl finally got on the scoreboard with a big play when Justin Allen busted free for a 74-yard touchdown run to make it 35-7, but the Raiders made sure there would be no dramatic comeback.

Cottingame threw a 52-yard scoring strike to Kirven to make it 42-7 and Thein Tran added an 8-yard touchdown run later in the third quarter.

Sunnyvale was in cruise control in the fourth quarter, tacking on a late field goal by Casey Crenshaw to provide the final margin.

The Raiders will now turn their attention to district play and Farmersville, which fell to 2-2 on Friday with a 24-7 loss to state-ranked Melissa.

Farmersville hung tough for a while, tying the game at 7-7 on a 19-yard touchdown run from Andrew Simmons early in the second half.

Melissa proved to be too much, though, as Marcus Ellis scored on touchdown runs of 51 and two yards later in the third quarter to blow the game open.
