Sunnyvale volleyball team notches district win

The Sunnyvale volleyball team entered the season with high hopes and for good reason.
The Raiders were coming off back-to-back district championships and part of their 30-8 overall record last season included an 11-1 mark in district play.
Through the first week of the 12-2A season, Sunnyvale had already doubled the number of district losses.
The good news for the Raiders is those two losses appear to have come at the hands of two of the district favorites, meaning if Sunnyvale takes care of business against its other district foes, it will be primed to achieve their main goals when they get another crack at Pilot Point and Caddo Mills down the road.
"We want to win district and advance in the playoffs," Sunnyvale head coach Nicholas Gay said. "We are working toward playing our best at the end of the season."
The Raiders took the first step in the right direction on Tuesday as they earned a 25-17, 25-10, 25-12 victory over Leonard.
In an uneven district scheduling format, Sunnyvale will get a quick chance to see how much they have improved in two weeks when they play at Pilot Point on Saturday. The Raiders will then have a bye on Tuesday before returning to action on Sept. 28 to host Farmersville.
Sunnyvale edges Italy to improve to 3-0
The Sunnyvale football team got strong performances from Ryan Cottingame and Josh Quinn to pick up a 21-14 victory on the road at Italy on Friday.
The Raiders are now 3-0 for the second consecutive season.
It has been a solid all-around start for Sunnyvale on both sides of the ball.
Cottingame has made a smooth transition into the starting quarterback role, completing 43-of-78 passes for 573 yards. He has thrown seven touchdowns compared with only three interceptions and has added 142 yards on the ground.
Abdul Khalif has been the go-to running back with 35 carries for 266 yards and four touchdowns.
Quinn has been a terror on the outside with 16 catches for 275 yards and six touchdowns as he leads a quintet of Raiders with at least five catches.
The defense, meanwhile, has been stout, allowing its opponents an average of 13.6 points per game.
Up next for Sunnyvale is Maypearl, a team that was defeated, 41-14, by the same Italy squad that the Raiders beat this week. But Sunnyvale cannot be caught looking ahead to a big week that lies ahead featuring not only the District 6-2A Division I opener against Farmersville, but also Homecoming weekend.
CROSS COUNTRY
The Sunnyvale boys and girls cross country teams will kick off the season on Saturday with a meet at the Canton First Monday Grounds.
