DISTRICT 12-5A VOLLEYBALL: Skeeters notch key victory to remain in playoff race

Although the 12-5A season is not even halfway over, three teams have risen to the top of the district standings.
Unfortunately for the Mesquite ISD teams, they are not a part of that race, meaning it is likely they will be part of a four-team battle along with Longview for the fourth and final playoff spot.
Mesquite took a huge step toward getting back into the playoff picture on Tuesday with a 25-21, 25-17, 22-25, 25-22 victory over North Mesquite.
It also prevented the Stallions, who are 2-4, from creating some distance between themselves and the other playoff contenders.
Horn had a chance to move into a tie for fourth place on Tuesday but dropped a tough 25-23, 27-25, 20-25, 21-25, 15-11 decision to Longview. It was the first district win of the season for the Lobos.
On Friday, it was North Mesquite that got the better end of a long match as it outlasted Longview for a 23-25, 26-24, 20-25, 26-24, 15-8 victory.
The other MISD teams were not as fortunate on Friday, as Rockwall-Heath swept Horn in a 25-8, 25-12, 25-8 victory, while Tyler Lee earned a three-game win over Mesquite
The Red Raiders have been flying underneath the radar for much of the season, but that all changed on Tuesday when they picked up a 25-21, 28-26, 24-26, 25-18 victory over previously-unbeaten Rockwall.
That win allowed Tyler Lee to move into a tie for second place at 4-1 along with the Yellow Jackets, with both teams a game behind Rockwall-Heath.
The next week should provide some separation between the three district leaders, as well as the remaining playoff contenders.
Rockwall-Heath will have a chance to prove it is for real when it hosts Rockwall on Friday and then takes on Tyler Lee on Tuesday.
Mesquite will try to follow up on its big victory when it hosts Longview on Friday. The Skeeters will then get a rest on Tuesday with their bye.
Horn will travel to play at Tyler Lee on Friday before returning home on Tuesday to host North Mesquite, which has its bye on Friday.
