Life in Class 5A for R.L. Turner's football team begins at 7 p.m. Thursday when the Lions travel to face Irving MacArthur at Irving Schools Stadium.

MacArthur enters the contest at 2-1, including a 21-17 win over Haltom and a 55-26 win over Richardson, while the Lions are still in search of their first win.

Turner's latest attempt to procure a victory came Friday, but the Lions were unable to keep pace with Wilmer-Hutchins in the second half of a 34-21 loss.

The teams were tied at the break, 14-14, and Turner actually led early in the second quarter by seven before Hutchins rattled off 27 consecutive points.

Trailing, 7-0, in the first quarter, Turner got on the board when Nick Landin connected with Ralph Alvarez for an 8-yard touchdown pass. The Lions gained their first lead when Landin found Jorge Lorta for a 22-yard score. However, Turner wouldn't score again until 1:45 remained in the fourth quarter when Taylor Freeman punched in a run from 7 yards out for the final margin.

Still, the Lions had plenty of positives to take away, including its closest margin of defeat on the year and gaining a season-high 297 yards on offense.

Turner recorded two touchdown passes on just five attempts for 65 yards, while J.P. Patterson notched his second consecutive 100-yard game on the ground, finishing with a season-high 162 yards on 20 carries. Lorta led the receivers with two receptions for 54 yards.

Volleyball: Lady Lions drop a pair of matches

Turner's volleyball team continued to have trouble during the past week in district as the Lady Lions (0-5) were swept in a pair of matches.

Turner came up short Sept. 18 against L.D. Bell (25-16, 25-15, 25-11) before suffering a loss Friday against Euless Trinity (25-6, 25-9, 25-10).

The Lady Lions continued in district Tuesday against Grapevine (results not available as of press time) before traveling to Irving MacArthur at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
