LEISD School Board member retires

Published: Tuesday, September 18, 2012 10:36 PM CDT
The Little Elm ISD School Board of Trustees said goodbye to member Molly Fulks and honored her on Sept. 10 for her seven years of service on the board. The district accepted her resignation earlier this month when she notified them of her retirement.

"It was a very hard decision. I raised my kids in the community. It was just an opportunity I couldn't pass up for my family," Fulks said.

Fulks and her family have recently moved to Arlington to pursue an opportunity for her daughter. As of yet, she does not have plans to pursue a public position.

"Right now I'm focusing on my family," Fulks said.

At Monday's work session meeting, board members presented Fulks with a plaque, flowers and thank you cards written by students.

"The handwritten cards are among the things I will treasure, as they symbolize the many students this board cares for," Fulks said in a release from LEISD. "I will remain this school district's biggest cheerleader and advocate for many years to come."

School Board President Sally Coleman shared a list of the district's accomplishments while Fulks was on the board. Some of those accomplishments include opening Lakeview Elementary and Oak Point Elementary and the launch of 1:1 digital learning initiative.

"We certainly wish Molly the best. Not only has she served our students and community well, she has become a personal friend and an example of what a board member should be," said Coleman in the release.

While serving on the board, in which she was the president twice in 2007 and 2008, Fulks believes the district has done a great job as a team in handling the explosive growth in the town.

"I think we've made great strives in curriculum and academics and closing the achievement gap. There is still work to be done there, but there has been great progress in that area," Fulks said.

She said the measures the previous board before she joined had put into place that were carried on by the current board have aided the district when state funding decreased.

"We weren't having to go into the reserve funds [like others]. We're probably one of the most physically sound districts in the state," Fulks said.

In Fulks' opinion, her biggest accomplishment serving on the board focuses on the academics side. Enrollment for AP classes have increased as well as dual credit participation. Being able to prepare students for post-high school is the biggest accomplishment someone can have as an educator or sitting on the board, she shared.

"Personally, it's more about the academics and creating a culture where the kids want to go to school and want to learn, where they feel safe coming to school," Fulks said. "With the new curriculum we put into place, I think these kids will be well prepared when they leave high school."

The board appointed Dee Dee Lear to serve in the vacant Place 1 seat until the next election is held in May 2013. According to the release, Lear has served on the Little Elm Town Council and was president of the Little Elm Economic Development Corporation. She is the vice president of business development for Arrow Enterprise Computing Solutions and also serves in the sales and leadership department.

"I'm going to miss the community, but I will always be very supportive," Fulks said.
