Campout creeping up: Event allows families to spend time together outdoors
By Kenny Green, kgreen@starlocalnews.com
The city of Mesquite is giving outdoor enthusiasts an activity to spend some quality time with their families in October.
The Mesquite Parks and Recreation Department is hosting its annual haunted family campout on Saturday, Oct. 27 and Sunday, Oct. 28 at Camp Rorie Galloway, 3100 Lawson Road.
"The event allows families to campout by setting up a tent and decorating," said Alyssa Smith, parks and recreation department marketing specialist.
Among the activities planned for the event include a tent decorating contest, family pumpkin painting, tent-o-treat, a costume/scream contest, story-telling and S'mores. The fee covers the cost off all activities, dinner and a light breakfast.
"The campout offers some family fun for the falls season in a safe environment," Smith said. "This really is a fun way for the family to spend some time together."
Participants are encouraged to bring bags of candy to distribute during the tent-o-treat event. Awards will be given for best decorated campsite and top costume.
"At dusk on Saturday we will have a tent-o-treat activity," Smith said.
Small propane grills are allowed at the camp but RVs, alcohol, glass containers and pets are not. There will be staff initiated campfire that will burn all night; no personal fires are permitted at the camp.
"We will have several games and activities planned through the evening of the event," Smith said.
For information on the campout contact the parks department at 972-216-6260 or visit the city's website, www.cityofmesquite.com.
