Gathering feedback: Developers weighing-in on city's comprehensive plan

Published: Thursday, September 20, 2012 10:12 AM CDT
The Realize Rowlett 2020 Phase II process has reached the point where the city staff is meeting with blue ribbon committees which include several local developers. The committees are designed for the city to get feedback from the development community about aspects of the city's plan that are appealing and those that aren't appealing to developers.

"We have had two interviews so far. We were supposed to have a third last week but it was cancelled and rescheduled for early next week," said Erin Jones, planning director. "it is going really good we have gotten lots of good feedback. I think it was a lot to ask for them to review something of this magnitude in their free-time so there have been a few that I don't know that they read in enough detail to give us detailed responses but they did provide us with their overview. "

Jones said she met with Dennis Wilson and Matt Grubisich, a certified arborist on the advisory committee to discuss tree mitigation within the city's urban districts.

"We have known from the very beginning that tree mitigation is going to look a lot different in the more urban districts than it does currently because you are asking people to replace a lot more street trees," Jones said. "We are looking at what trees we really should incentivize and what's the trade-off."

She said they began the framework of some mitigation policies that the city staff hopes to present to council by Oct. 4.

Jones said the city staff will meet with the advisory board's subcommittee to get into some of the smaller details.

"We are kind of to the critical items and we want to be looking at about 10 items and any one of them can be controversial," Jones said.

"In some cases we have got conflicting opinions about things and we need some perspective from a policy perspective as to what the right answers are so we can go back to the committees and in some instances the downtown advisory board and say here is the perspective and here are the issues," said Lynda Humble, city manager.
