Opportunistic Skeeters trounce Longview to remain undefeated

Published: Sunday, September 30, 2012 11:12 PM CDT
The way Mesquite has been playing this season, no team can afford to give them anything.

Longview learned that lesson the hard way on Friday.

The Lobos put the ball on the ground nine times, losing five of them, and the Skeeters took advantage to pull away for a thorough 33-7 victory at E.H. Hanby Stadium.

Mesquite stays perfect for the season, improving to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in 12-5A, while dropping Longview to 3-2 and 0-1.

Even though this was the first game of the 12-5A season, it was viewed as a district title showdown by some, as the two teams were picked to finish 1-2 in the preseason poll.

That never materialized, as Mesquite took control early and a suffocating defense that allowed only 148 total yards refused to let the Lobos mount a charge.

The Skeeters grabbed the early lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by Junior Session. The lead swelled to 10-0 a short time later, as Marco Rodriguez, who would prove to have a busy night, booted a 23-yard field goal.

Mesquite got the ball back and this time went to the air, as Alex Cooper hit Rashard Higgins with a 49-yard touchdown pass to make it 17-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Skeeters continued to get opportunities in good field position, but Longview's defense was stubborn.

Fortunately for Mesquite, it did not come away empty-handed thanks to the leg of Rodriguez, who kicked field goals of 22 and 36 yards to make it 23-0 at halftime, and his 26-yarder in the third quarter pushed the lead to 26-0.

Longview finally got on the scoreboard in the final quarter, as Antonius Sanders had an 8-yard touchdown run.

The Skeeters added a late score of their own for good measure, with Cooper scrambling in for a 49-yard touchdown run to provide the final margin.
