Panthers strong in Colony meet

Plano East cross country was in unfamiliar territory Saturday for the Tom Landry Invitational.

Squaring off against a litany of TAPPS competition in Irving didn't phase the Panthers, who placed five of the 5,000-meter race's top 16 runners en route to a first-place finish (43 points).

Kevin Rojas finished first overall (16:25.00, with teammate Jack Meeks in fourth (17:16.00), Sam Reyes in 10th (17:39.00), Dylan Smith in 12th (17:52.00) and Tristan Moore in 16th (18:18.00).

Plano West was also in action, competing in The Colony Cougar Classic at Hidden Cove Park.

The boys finished fourth (106), led by Grant Copeland in third (16:19.21), Walter Edstrom in 10th (16:33.96) and Drew Magura in 23rd (17:15.40). The Lady Wolves found themselves in fifth (156). Contributing to that effort was Valarie Bradley in 15th place (20:21.87), while Savannah Borgsmiller finished 22nd (20:49.30).

The Panthers and Wolves run Saturday at Norbuck Park (Jesuit Invitational) while Plano Senior is in Round Rock (McNeil Invitational).

Palmer named GSC POTW

Plano native and West Florida women's soccer standout Chelsea Paler was named the Gulf South Conference Player of the Week.

Palmer earned the honor after recording two goals and five assists in two games -- both wins for the Argonauts. She had a hand in all four of West's goals in a 4-1 victory over Alabama-Huntsville, scoring one goal and assisting on three others. Palmer nearly matched that total with a goal and two assists in the Argonauts' 6-2 win over Shorter.

Palmer is second on the team in points (19), second in goals (6) and first in assists (7).

Acosta makes U18 National

FC Dallas midfielder Kellyn Acosta, a Plano resident, was one of 20 players chosen Wednesday to represent the U.S. U18 Men's National Team.

The squad is coached by Javier Perez.

Acosta departed Thursday for an 11-day training camp in Mill, Netherlands. The camp will run through Sept. 17 and include an international friendly Tuesday against the Netherlands U18 squad. The U.S. will also play friendly matches against U18 club teams representing Feyenoord Rotterdam, Borussia Dortmund and Club Brugge.

A former member of the U15 and U17 National Teams, Acosta most recently appeared in the Lisbon International Tournament under Perez.

Burkhead up for national award

Seven months ago, Nebraska senior Rex Burkhead won the 2012 Rare Disease Champion Award for his work with 6 year old Jack Hoffman.

Now, the Plano Senior alum has been named to the 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.

"These players have demonstrated the unique ability to balance academics with athletics while donating their limited free time to serve others," said Kathy Mabe, Allstate West region president.

Burkhead has been mentoring Hoffman, who has a brain tumor, by meeting with him 3-4 times a week. The running back hosted a lunch and led a tour of Memorial Stadium for Hoffman's family.

Burkhead also appears on an anti-bullying public service announcement and is a huddle leader for the Nebraska Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

The former Wildcat was one of 11 Division I players selected for the team.

Fans can vote for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team captain at: ESPN.com. The team will be invited to New Orleans for a youth football clinic leading up to the 2013 Allstate Sugar Bowl.
