National Chess Day was established in 1976 by President Gerald R. Ford, “to give special recognition to a game that generates challenge, intellectual stimulation, and enjoyment for citizens of all ages.” This year, McKinney Chess will help celebrate by hosting a National Chess Day K-12 Scholastic Tournament Oct. 13th, 2012 at the Imagine International Academy of North Texas.

While this is a couple weeks away, it’s a good time to register and take advantage of the early registration discount (by Oct. 6th) and free GOLD membership to a www.chesskid.com, a website designed for kids under 13 to learn, play and practice chess within the McKinney Chess membership. The tournament early entry fee is $25 and requires US Chess Federation membership (www.uschess.org). You can register on-line at www.mckinneychess.org and click on Tournament Registration.

McKinney Chess is an organization created in 2011 to help promote and advance chess in our city though the assistance of many different organizations and individuals. They offer chess lessons at the McKinney Performing Arts Center, host chess tournaments and help establish after school chess clubs including the newest chess club which is part of the enrichment activities at the Imagine International Academy of North Texas charter school.

Chess just like any other sport has a competitive side. For a player to have a rating, they must be a member of the US Chess Federation and participate in a rated tournament where they can earn or lose points based on the level of competition and the opponents’ strength. Once you have a rating you will keep that rating. You can earn rating points all the way up to Grand Master level. There will be 5 rounds of chess and players are separated by ability (not grade) into 3 sections (placed in a section determined by their "RATING POINTS"). Each round a player can earn 1 point for each win, 1/2 pt for a draw/stalemate, 0 points for a loss. The winners of each section will be determined by the total number of points earned, i.e. 4 out of 5 points. Both individual and teams are encouraged to participate. There are trophies for the top 5 individuals and team trophies for the top 3 teams in each section.
