Football: Offensive Inefficiency: Lewisville struggles in loss to Arlington

ARLINGTON -- Running back Ahkeel Guy gave Lewisville fans something to finally cheer about Friday night when he sprinted 87 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown.
But it was one of those "too little, too late" sort of things.
Lewisville dropped to 1-3 on the season Friday with a 41-13 loss to Arlington (3-0) in a game that seemed like field goals would be the only scoring the Farmers would do.
Offensively, things got off to a rough start immediately.
In four of Lewisville's first five plays, the team had negative yardage as quarterback Matt McDougal and running back Deandre Brown were met quickly by an aggressive Colts' front line.
The Farmers went three-and-out in four of their first five possessions.
And the team didn't reach Arlington's side of the field until 3:45 left in the second quarter. Once it did, Tluang Hmung put the Farmers on the scoreboard with a 24-yard field goal, his first of two on the night, with 1:27 left.
Arlington quickly responded with a touchdown to expand its lead to 31-3 going into halftime.
"Offensively, we struggled," said Gregg Miller, Lewisville head coach. "They have a sound defense over there and coach (Scott) Peach does a great job over there. We knew this when we put them on our schedule."
Lewisville was held to 26 yards in the first quarter, but bounced back slightly in the second with 91 yards.
Miller can't help but wonder if the loss of starting tight end Quay Bradford, who is done for the season after having surgery, may have lingered.
"When you lose a leader like that, it hurts," he said. "Sometimes it takes a couple weeks to get back into it."
Arlington, on the other hand, had no offensive struggles in the first half.
The Colts scored on five of their six first-half possessions and made use of the legs of Brandon Washington, who ran for 96 yards on 10 carries in the first half. He had touchdown runs of 28 and 23 yards in the first quarter to help build a 17-0 lead. In the second quarter, quarterback Connor Huffman connected on a 66-yard touchdown pass to Dontha Robinson. Later, Raymond Sheard scored on a 6-yard run in the closing seconds of the half to put Arlington up, 31-3.
The Colts had 300 yards of offense in the first half, and they were economical in their scoring. Arlington used three and five plays, respectively, to score two of its first-half touchdowns and seven plays on its other two.
"Schematically on our zone, we had different fits," Miller said. "We had a couple of linebackers out tonight. We had some guys step in, but it's just too much to practice in a week. We're going to have to fix some things because we're going to see this type of offense again."
Arlington put the final touches on its offensive showcase in the second half when Washington scored on a 59-yard run with 6:41 left in the third quarter. Arlington added a field goal before Guy's big scoring run for Lewisville.
"We had a good second-half effort," Miller said. "But I think we were shell shocked in the first half. It's hard to simulate that kind of speed in practice."
For the game, McDougal completed 8-of-17 passes for 90 yards. Brown rushed 20 times for 96 yards, though Arlington tackled him for a loss seven times. Receiver Jordan Jorgenson caught four passes for 63 yards. Washington paced the Colts with 175 rushing yards while Huffman completed 14-of-22 passes for 167 yards. He also threw two interceptions, one snagged by Jaden Wright and one by Jordan Meyers.
"We didn't give up and we didn't play cheap," Miller said. "And sometimes teams do that when they're down like we were. I'm proud of our players and our coaches for that."
Lewisville next hosts McKinney Boyd (2-2) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
