Football: Lewisville struggles against running game, Falls to McKinney Boyd, 42-14

Published: Saturday, September 29, 2012 12:48 AM CDT
LEWISVILLE - Lewisville head coach Gregg Miller knew his team would see a lot of McKinney Boyd senior running back Bryan Driskell on Friday.

And the more the Farmers saw him, the worse things got for Lewisville.

Driskell led Boyd to a 42-14 win by scoring four rushing touchdowns on a night that the Farmers could do little to stop him.

Boyd improves to 3-2 on the season while Lewisville drops to 1-4.

Driskell, who set a school record with his 47th career rushing touchdown when he scored his third of the night, rushed for 281 yards on 38 carries. His rushing total is a season best.

"We played well up front in the second half, and he ran well," said Boyd head coach Don Drake. "In the first half, Lewisville did a good job and played with a lot of passion. We had to get out there and push up the level of intensity."

It was still anyone's game in the first half. Lewisville got on the board first with a short touchdown run by senior running back Deandre Brown. Less than two minutes later, Driskell tied the game with a 12-yard touchdown run. Driskell ran 21 times for 148 yards in the first half.

Kevin McCormick's 14-yard touchdown catch from Curtis Ladd with 1:08 left in the second quarter gave Boyd the lead for good.

But the real fireworks came in the second half.

Driskell scored on touchdown runs of three and nine yards in the third quarter and added a 13-yard touchdown run in the fourth to make it 35-7. Dedrick Scrivens added a 23-yard touchdown late in the game to put Boyd up 42-7.

Driskell had 10 runs for 10 yards or more on the night, five in each half.

"We helped them a lot," Miller said. "They did what they were supposed to, and we didn't do what we are supposed to. We didn't play well up front, and that's the second week in a row that has happened."

Miller added giving up so many rushing yards was not a result of having some injuries in the linebacker position.

"Our players have done well filling in," Miller said. "It's just been fundamental fits and tackling that has hurt us."

Boyd took advantage more in the second half, scoring on all of its possessions.

"We need to establish the run to be successful," Drake said. "We didn't do a good job of that in the first half. We challenged the kids at halftime, and in the second half, they played better."

Defensively, Boyd stepped it up in the second half as well. Brown led the Farmers with 130 rushing yards on 14 carries in the first half but was limited to 36 rushing yards on 12 carries after halftime.

As a team, Lewisville totaled 201 yards in the first half and 112 afterward.

Senior defensive backs Paxton Larson and Taylor Fann snagged interceptions in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, to halt Lewisville drives. Junior linebacker Adam Brown recorded an interception in the second quarter as Lewisville was threatening at the Boyd 29-yard line.

Lewisville missed other opportunities in the first half when the Farmers lost a fumble at the Boyd 19-yard line early in the second quarter. As the half was drawing to a close, a field-goal attempt sailed left.

Lewisville junior quarterback Matt McDougal completed nine of 16 passes for 87 yards with three interceptions.

Senior running back Ahkeel Guy scored on a 47-yard touchdown run late in the game.

Ladd finished the night completing seven of 11 passes for 104 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Driskell also caught three passes for 43 yards.
