New Allen IFL entry announces team name

So you say you want a revolution, we-ll, ya know ... you got one!

From a pool of nearly 1,000 entries, Championship Sports Group announced this week the name chosen for the new Allen Indoor Football League team is the Revolution.

Plano resident Todd Carlson submitted the name chosen as the winning entry. Carlson will receive $5,000 in cash and/or tickets as a result of his submission being chosen.

"I am an older guy and have loved history since I was a child," Carlson said. "The story of Davy Crockett and the Alamo is among my favorites and I thought ... the emotion behind the name would be very fitting for a community to get behind, particularly here in Texas."

Team Chairman Paul Williams agreed. "We knew from the beginning that we wanted to be a symbol of passion with a local flavor and the Texas Revolution says it better than any of the many other entries."

The new team logo is a kid-friendly cannon with an attitude. The illustrated icon is in the new team colors of red, white and blue with a black border that includes the subtle likeness of the star and flag of Texas. Team VP of Sales Barney Welch said, "We selected the colors largely because they are representative of the Texas flag.

"However," Welch said, "we also recognized the cobalt blue reminds us of the beautiful skies we are accustomed to enjoying here in (the area) more days each year than almost anywhere in America. We added jet black as a representation of the cannons that won Texas its independence so long ago, and, of course, the blood red will serve as a reminder to our opponents of exactly how fierce we are going to be on the field."

The Texas Revolution also announced its second player signing. Former University of Texas standout Ramonce Taylor played for the Allen Wranglers during the 2012 season. The wide receiver/kick returner scored 15 touchdowns during his career at UT, including one in the Horns' epic Rose Bowl win over Southern California in the January 2006 BCS Championship game. Taylor joins Frankie Solomon Jr. on the Revolution roster.

"I am honored to be one of the first players signed and to be involved with the team so early in its creation," Taylor said. "I believe the Revolution leadership will present the community with a first-class, championship-caliber team that I will be proud to be part of."

The team is reportedly close to hiring a new coach and expects to introduce that person next month. Season tickets are on sale and start at $99 each with games expected to kick off in March.
