Hosts with the Most: Golden Grip wins opening meet
BY Kevin Hageland, khageland@starlocalnews.com
Some kids hold a party before going back to school.
Plano-based Golden Grip Gymnastics put a variation on that last month by hosting the Last Summer Splash. The USA Gymnastics-sanctioned district qualifier drew 180 athletes from nine gyms across the Metroplex.
The stout field didn't deter the home team from excelling though as Golden Grip won 22 gold medals and two team trophies at the first meet of the season.
The gold rush began at Level 3.
Leading the way was Gracie Flores, who placed first on bars (9.05), first on beam (9.7) and tied for first on floor exercise (9.4) to take the top spot in the all-around competition with a cumulative mark of 37.55. Teammate Gabrielle Wallace tied for first on floor with Flores and placed second on bars (9.2) and in the all-around (36.750). Finishing out the 1-2-3 sweep of the all-around was Sophia Flores, who was third overall after garnering silver on the vault (9.55). Also receiving Level 3 medals for Golden Grip were Alexa Shelton, Chelsea Nunley, Brently Barton, Lia Ross, Makenna Malone, Ella Spicer, Sally Ismael, Natalie Savarese and Ananya Chakravarthi.
Rapidly adding to the medal count was Golden Grip's Level 4 contingent.
In the Junior A division, Anna Ichiba won on bars (9.4) and beam (9.5). She also placed second on vault (9.55) en route to winning the all-around with a combined score of 37.850. In the Senior B division, Plano resident Araceli Wilk snagged a silver on the beam (9.45). Other level 4 gymnasts receiving medals were Carolyn Lindberg, Brooke Hudy, Jillian Melander and Hannah Rhodes.
In the Level 4 Achievement division, Golden Grip's Abigail Moriearty took first on vault (9.5), beam (9.5) and floor (9.6) to win the all-around with a score 36.80. Erika Almholt and Natalie Hardy also procured medals.
Continuing the trend of the day, Level 5 excelled as well.
In the Junior A division, Georgia Guynn took second place on vault (8.475) and third in the all-around (33.925) while Daria Indioukov finished second on floor (9.0) and third on bars (8.3). In the Junior B division, Emma Lindberg ran roughshod over the field by winning gold on vault (9.05), bars (9.5) and in the all-around (36.450). In the Senior division, Taryn Uhr and Julia Savarese also medaled. Chancey Anderson and Kymberly Davis did the same in the Achievement division.
The Level 6 team featured only two girls, but they combined for eight gold medals.
In the Junior division, Shelby Peterson took the top of the podium for vault (9.075), beam (9.6), floor (9.05) and the all-around (35.675). In the Senior division, Planoite Te'ja Morgan finished first on vault (9.275), beam (9.2), floor (8.55) and all-around (35.225).
"The girls did very well," Indioukov said, "and I am looking forward to watching their progress as the season continues."
