PCA volleyball sweeps JPII

The initial meeting between the Prestonwood Christian Academy and John Paul II volleyball teams featured the Lady Cardinals giving the home team a scare before the Lady Lions pulled out a four-game win.

Prestonwood would more emphatically impose its will Tuesday night on the road in Round 2.

Prestonwood picked up the sweep (25-18, 25-12, 25-22) to stay right behind Bishop Lynch in the TAPPS 1-5A standings. The Lady Lions and Lady Friars will meet again Oct. 18.

In victory, junior Ashley Morgan led Prestonwood with 16 kills while senior Katie Staiger chipped in 15 and junior Haley Wolken added 25 assists.

Prior to that, Prestonwood returns home for a 6 p.m. match today against Trinity Christian Academy while John Paul will be in its friendly confines at the same time, hosting Argyle Liberty Christian.

Morgan commits to Ole Miss

Just a few days after announcing he had de-committed from playing football for Florida State, Prestonwood Christian Academy senior Christian Morgan announced his commitment to Ole Miss.

The Lions' tight end, ranked No. 15 in the nation at his position according to Rivals, announced his decision Sunday via Twitter.

"I have decided to commit to THE University of Mississippi!" Morgan tweeted. "It has been a long journey but God has guided me the whole way. #RebelNation"

Morgan had previously committed to Florida State in June. At the time, Ole Miss was one of his four finalists. Despite announcing his commitment to play for the Seminoles then, Morgan still made the recruiting rounds, including a trip to Oxford, Miss.

The 6-foot-5, 240-pound senior currently leads the Lions in receptions (15), receiving yards (199) and receiving touchdowns (4).

Acosta makes U18 National

FC Dallas midfielder Kellyn Acosta, a Plano resident, was one of 20 players chosen Wednesday to represent the U.S. U18 Men's National Team.

The squad is coached by Javier Perez.

Acosta departed Thursday for an 11-day training camp in Mill, Netherlands. The camp will run through Sept. 17 and include an international friendly Tuesday against the Netherlands U18 squad. Burkhead up for national award

Seven months ago, Nebraska senior Rex Burkhead won the 2012 Rare Disease Champion Award for his work with 6 year old Jack Hoffman.

Now, the Plano Senior alum has been named to the 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.

"These players have demonstrated the unique ability to balance academics with athletics while donating their limited free time to serve others," said Kathy Mabe, Allstate West region president.

Burkhead has been mentoring Hoffman, who has a brain tumor, by meeting with him 3-4 times a week. The running back hosted a lunch and led a tour of Memorial Stadium for Hoffman's family.

Burkhead also appears on an anti-bullying public service announcement and is a huddle leader for the Nebraska Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

The former Wildcat was one of 11 Division I players selected for the team.

Fans can vote for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team captain at: ESPN.com. The team will be invited to New Orleans for a youth football clinic leading up to the 2013 Allstate Sugar Bowl.
