Early Onslaught: West Mesquite scores 55 points in first half en route to blowout win over Terrell

Published: Friday, October 5, 2012 12:59 AM CDT
The West Mesquite offense did not put up gaudy numbers on Thursday.

There was no need.

The Wrangler offense simply needed to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the defense and special teams and there was an abundance of those.

In a game that was over almost as soon as it started, West Mesquite raced to a 34-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back in a 61-14 victory over Terrell at Mesquite Memorial Stadium.

The Wranglers (4-1) stay perfect in District 10-4A at 2-0 while adding to the Tigers' (0-5, 0-2) woes, as they remained winless on the season.

Terrell managed only 126 yards in the game and turned the ball over five times. To compound their problems, the Tigers averaged only 17 yards on their eight punts.

That all added up to a consistently short field for the Wranglers.

It took West Mesquite a little while to get rolling, but there was no stopping them once they did, as they scored five touchdowns in a span of seven minutes in the opening quarter.

The Wranglers got started when Chason Virgil threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to William Stanley, and less than a minute later, Kameron Miles scored on a 3-yard run to make it 13-0.

West Mesquite was far from finished. Virgil, who only had to attempt 10 passes, completed eight of those with two touchdowns, the second of which was an 11-yarder to Nate Davis.

Raashaan Reason and Jamarie Williams then followed with touchdown runs of three and six yards, respectively, to push the advantage to 34-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Terrell picked up a bulk of its total yardage on an 81-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter to get on the scoreboard, but West Mesquite answered on a 4-yard run by Virgil.

The Wrangler defense had been dominant outside of the one play, and to atone for that lone blemish, it decided to get into the scoring act, as Traveon Jones had a 31-yard interception return for a touchdown and Will Earley followed with a 26-yarder to pay dirt to make it 55-7 at halftime.

The second half was relatively quiet with the outcome all but determined. The Tigers scored once on an interception return in the third quarter, with Davis adding a 31-yard touchdown run in the fourth to close out the scoring.
