HV council approves policy for Veteran recognition on monument
From staff reports
During Tuesday's meeting, the Highland Village City Council approved a resolution amending the policy for veteran recognition on the city's Veterans Monument. The approved policy allows recognition on the monument of veterans killed in action that were or had been Highland Village residents and honorably discharged veterans who maintained Highland Village residency for a period of at least one year at any point in their life. The city will fund the 6" x 6" plaque of the veteran killed in action and the family or sponsor will fund the 2" x6" plaque of the honorably discharged veteran. The previous policy only allowed recognition of deceased veterans who had lived in Highland Village. City staff had received requests to honor veterans still living in Highland Village so the council formed an ad hoc committee of Highland Village veterans to review and amend the policy. The committee presented their findings to the council at the Sept. 25 meeting. The Veterans Monument is located on the grounds of the Highland Village Municipal Complex, adjacent to the Armed Services Monument and the Inland Trail.
The council presented Andra Boxberger and Fince Espinoza with the Parks Department the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation's Silver City Member award. The department received the award for their recreation programs and registering the teams and individuals.
"Over the last several years our Parks and Recreation department has expanded the offering of recreational programs and activities. The response has been well-received by our community," said Mayor Pat Davis. "The Parks Department is deserving of this special recognition."
"We agree with the judge's comments," Davis said. "These videos are funny, fun to watch, and very effective."
The council recognized Oct. 7-13 as Fire Prevention Week and the Highland Village Fire Department's dedication to the "Have Two Ways Out" program.
During the city manager report, the HVTV update informed residents of the opportunity to sponsor a veteran for the annual Salute Our Veterans Lunch. Sponsorships begin at $45, which covers the cost of three veterans. Contact Lori Wright at 972-899-5131 for more information. The lunch will be held Nov. 8 at Celebrations Event Center in Highland Village. The update also provided information on the upcoming Family Camp Out to be held at Pilot Knoll Park Oct. 20. Also included was information on the Highland Village ePerks program, which is a monthly email newsletter providing coupons to Highland Village residents. The Highland Village Paper Shredding day is scheduled to take place from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Highland Village Municipal Complex.
