Services held for CHS student found shot to death

A memorial service for Jonah Blackwell, the 18-year-old Coppell High School student who was found shot to death at McInnish Park Tuesday afternoon, was held Friday morning at the Valley Ranch Baptist Church in Coppell.
He was the second Coppell High School senior to die in the early part of this week. Jacob Logan, 17, died after jumping from a cliff into Possum Kingdom Lake Sunday afternoon.
The two deaths, in addition to being mourned by family members, are being felt throughout Coppell High School.
Jacob was a captain of the Coppell Cowboys football team and Jonah was a member of the Silver Spurs, a male spirit team which performs at games. Jonah also ran cross country. He also had been a volunteer for Stand Up for Kids. He had worked part time at the Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine.
At Friday night’s game in Flower Mound as well as at school on Friday, many of the students and faculty were to wear ribbons and shirts of blue, which was Jacob’s favorite color, and ribbons of orange, which was Jonah’s favorite color.
Jonah’s family had requested that, in lieu of flowers, that donations be made in his memory to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention by going to www.afsp.org.
Meanwhile services were pending for Jacob.
Jon Stovall, Carrollton Police Department public information officer, said Coppell police had contacted Carrollton police Tuesday afternoon after receiving calls from Jonah’s friends that he had sent tweets and emails that indicated that he was suicidal.
Stovall said Carrollton police found the body in a wooded area at the back of the park. He said a handgun was found at the scene.
"The medical examiner will make the final ruling, but we are investigating it as a suicide," Stovall said.
Both Stovall and friends of the victim said they do not believe there was any connection between the apparent drowning of Jacob Logan and the death of Jonah Blackwell.
Stovall said the investigation indicated that Jonah was facing several personal issues.
A friend who asked not to be identified said, "He always seemed happy. We can't understand why he did this."
