FOOTBALL BREAKDOWN: 11-5A, 12-5A, 10-4A, TAPPS 2-II

11-5A FOOTBALL STANDINGS

Quick look: The final week of the 11-5A season holds plenty of intrigue with four teams still fighting over a pair of playoff berths.

Sachse, at 3-2, and Rowlett, Lakeview and Naaman Forest, all at 2-3, are separated by a game in the standings, and as fate would have it, they are matched up against one another on the final day of the regular season.

There are several different scenarios that can unfold, with the most straightforward solution starting with a Mustang victory over the Rangers on Friday at Williams Stadium.

If that happens, they would earn one spot and the winner of the Eagles/Patriots game on Friday at Homer B. Johnson Stadium would secure the other.

A Naaman Forest victory, however, would complicate things, as that would create a three-way tie for the final two spots.

If the Rangers win and Rowlett defeats Lakeview, the tie would be between those two teams and Sachse, with all three posting a 1-1 record against one another.

The secondary tiebreaker is point differential with a 14-point cap. The Eagles are already set at plus-11 due to their 37-7 victory over Naaman Forest (+14) and 23-20 loss to Sachse (-3). That would be enough to assure them of one of the postseason spots.

Sachse (+3) enters the game with a better point differential than Naaman Forest (-14), meaning the Rangers would have to win by nine points to flip that difference and claim the fourth and final berth.

If the Rangers win and the Patriots defeat Rowlett, Sachse would be the odd team out due to losses to both Naaman Forest and Lakeview, leaving those two teams with the final two spots.

Garland has already secured the 11-5A championship and will be the top seed in the Division I bracket where it will meet Horn in a rematch of an early-season clash won by the Jaguars, 42-0.

South Garland has a bye this week but has already clinched the top seed in the Division II bracket.

If Sachse makes the playoffs, it will be the second seed in the Division I bracket and take on 12-5A champion Mesquite in the bi-district round.

That would leave the second seed in the Division II bracket to either Rowlett or Naaman Forest.

If the Mustangs do not make the playoffs, Rowlett, or possibly Naaman Forest would be the second seed in Division I.

12-5A FOOTBALL STANDINGS

Quick look: The 12-5A playoff race continued to take shape last week, but there is still plenty to be determined in the final week of the regular season.

There are a couple of things for certain.

Mesquite crushed Rockwall in a 55-24 win last week to complete a perfect 10-0 regular season. The Skeeters, who have a bye this week, will be the top seed in the Class 5A Division I playoffs and will face either Sachse, Rowlett or Naaman Forest in the bi-district round of the playoffs in two weeks.

Horn, which was off this past week, will be the second seed in the Division I bracket, regardless how this week's game against North Mesquite turns out.

The Jaguars will see a familiar face in the opening round as they will draw 11-5A champion Garland, a team they defeated 42-0 earlier this year.

As for the Division II bracket, that chapter is still yet to be written.

Longview is 3-2 and has a one-game lead over both Rockwall and Rockwall-Heath, who stand at 2-3. The Lobos and Yellow Jackets are set to meet on Friday at Lobo Stadium.

Longview's path to the top seed in the Division II bracket is simple-win.

If the Lobos defeat Rockwall, Rockwall-Heath will claim the final playoff berth and be the No. 2 seed in Division II where they would face South Garland in the opening round. This would be the case regardless of the Hawks' outcome against winless Tyler Lee as they have the head-to-head tiebreaker against the Yellow Jackets.

The same applies if both Rockwall and Rockwall-Heath lose and North Mesquite upsets Horn to force a three-way tie for fourth. The Stallions would be eliminated because of losses to the other two teams, and the Hawks would have the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Yellow Jackets.

Rockwall's clearest path to the final playoff spot is to defeat Longview and hope Tyler Lee pulls the upset against Rockwall-Heath.

10-4A FOOTBALL STANDINGS

Quick look: The three top teams in 10-4A continued to roll, winning their three respective games by a combined score of 158-21.

Highland Park, Poteet and West Mesquite know they will be playing in week 11, but there are still some variables to be worked out, most notably with the clash between the Pirates and Wranglers on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Mesquite Memorial Stadium.

The Scots will likely wrap up a perfect district season when they host winless Terrell on Friday. Highland Park knows it will be the top seed in the Class 4A Division I bracket.

Poteet and West Mesquite will enter Friday's match-up with matching 5-1 records and the winner will earn sole possession of second place in the district standings.

That does not, however, necessarily translate into better seeding in the postseason.

The fourth and final playoff spot will go to the winner of the Carrollton Newman Smith/Forney game, which will take place on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Standridge Stadium.

If the Jackrabbits win, they will be in the Division II bracket. That means that West Mesquite would be the second seed in Division I and Poteet would be the top seed in Division II, regardless the outcome of Friday's game.

If Carrollton Newman Smith wins, it would join Highland Park in Division I as the second seed. That would mean that the winner between Poteet and West Mesquite would be the top seed in Division II, with the loser taking the second seed.

Looking beyond this week to the first round of the playoffs is difficult, as well.

In 9-4A, Frisco Centennial, Frisco and Prosper enter the final week tied for first place. Frisco Wakeland, Little Elm and The Colony are all vying for the final playoff berth. With several of those teams playing one another, there is still much to be determined later this week.

TAPPS 2-II STANDINGSs

Quick look: Dallas Christian used a huge first half to put away Tyler T.K. Gorman on Friday in a 49-0 victory that not only clinched the district championship but also the top seed in the TAPPS playoffs in two weeks.

The Chargers have a chance to finish with a perfect 10-0 record in the regular season with a victory over last-place Trinity Christian-Cedar Hill on Friday.

While Dallas Christian can take it easy knowing its place is secure, other teams still have plenty to play for.

Parish Episcopal and Tyler Grace Community have a big showdown on Friday. Both teams are 8-1 overall and 5-1 in district play, with those lone blemishes coming at the hands of Dallas Christian.

The winner of the Episcopal/Grace Community game will be the second seed from the district in the playoffs, with the loser settling for the third seed.

In the battle for the fourth and final spot, Bullard Brook Hill, at 3-3, has a one-game lead over both Carrollton Prince of Peace and Shelton, who are each 2-4.

Bullard Brook Hill will play on the road at Carrollton Prince of Peace on Friday with a chance to claim the final spot with a win.

A loss, however, would drop them back into a tie for fourth place. If Shelton is to defeat Tyler T.K. Gorman, it can make it a three-way tie between the teams.

Shelton defeated Carrollton Prince of Peace, 35-14, and lost to Bullard Brook Hill, 54-22. If Carrollton Prince of Peace is to knock off Bullard Brook Hill, all three of those teams would have a 1-1 record against one another, meaning they would have to go to secondary tiebreakers.
