Raccoons dominate Heritage

Frisco’s only chance of taking the top seed from District 9-4A involved the Raccoons winning out after falling to Centennial earlier in the season.

Heritage didn’t stand in the way of that Friday night, as the Raccoons won a 51-9 rout of the Coyotes.

Junior quarterback Jake Battaglia completed 11-of-14 pass attempts for 267 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions while his counterpart, Heritage sophomore Twayne Blackwell, managed just 118 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions after completing 11-of-24 attempts.

Junior fullback Matt Nollman tallied four touchdowns in the contest with two coming on the ground and another two coming courtesy of Battaglia’s arm.

The Raccoons now face a key district showdown at Prosper tonight at 7 p.m.

Lady Rangers highly regarded

The Lone Star girls basketball team is garnering plenty of preseason buzz.

The Lady Rangers earned a fifth-place ranking in the Texas Girls Coaches Association Preseason Poll on the heels of the 2012 season.

Key players such as Deja Snell, B’ria Wagner, Zoie Miller and Whitney Apari return for Lone Star.

Defending state champion Abilene Wylie tops the list with Krum, Kennedale and Lubbock Cooper rounding out the top five.

The Lady Rangers advanced to the second-round of the playoffs last season before a 48-37 loss to Celina spelled the end of their season. The Lady Bobcats also made the list with a tenth-place ranking.

Lone Star was victorious in Tuesday’s season opener, earning a 61-54 road victory against Frisco Heritage.

Landry Award nominations

For the third straight year, North Texas GMC Dealers will present the area’s top high school football player with The Landry Award.

The honor recognizes the Metroplex’s top high school player. The recipient will be chosen by a voting panel of former coaches and players, media members and local leaders. The Landry Award program will also recognize the Whataburger All-North Texas Team.

Fans can vote at: LandryAward.com.

Five finalists will be announced in November with 2012’s official winner named Dec. 6 at a ceremony at the Communities Foundation of Texas.
