Mesquite mows down Rockwall to complete perfect regular season
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
Mesquite will be the first to say that its ultimate goals are still yet to be achieved.
But there is something to be said for a perfect regular season.
After all, the Skeeters had only done that once in more than 100 years of football and that was in its 2001 state championship season.
The Skeeters not only complete a perfect 10-0 regular season, but they finish a 12-5A championship season with a 6-0 mark in district play. Mesquite has a bye next week, giving them some extra time off before they enter the Class 5A Division I playoffs as the district's No. 1 seed.
Mesquite wasted little time getting started as Junior Session scored on a 28-yard touchdown run to give them a 7-0 lead.
The Skeeters then went to the air, as Alex Cooper threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Dezmon Jackson and an 11-yard scoring strike to Rashard Higgins to make it 21-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Mesquite continued the onslaught in the second quarter, as Tyson Reed produced one of the longest plays of the season when he busted free for a 94-yard touchdown run.
Just a couple of minutes later, the Skeeters got another big play when Roderick McGruder had a 63-yard punt return for a score to extend the lead to 35-0.
Rockwall (3-6, 2-3) never gave up, getting a 29-yard touchdown pass from Xavier Castille to Dylan Campman to get on the scoreboard.
The teams then traded touchdowns in the final minutes of the first half. Higgins caught a short touchdown pass from Cooper for the Skeeters, and shortly after, Castille hit Chris Warren on a 46-yard scoring pass to make it 41-14 at halftime.
Mesquite tacked on two more scores in the second half, as Reed had a 9-yard touchdown run and Christian Watson scored from 21 yards out.
The Yellow Jackets got a field goal from Austin Morton and a short touchdown run by Castille to provide the final margin.
