North Mesquite's tough effort not enough as playoff hopes end with loss to Rockwall-Heath
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
North Mesquite knew that Friday's game against Rockwall-Heath was essentially a playoff game.
If the Stallions were to still be playing in two weeks, they would need to take down a Hawk team that was in the same dire need of a victory.
The teams brought a playoff-like intensity in a game that was close throughout, but in the end, Rockwall-Heath was able to hold on for a 21-14 victory at Mesquite Memorial Stadium.
Rockwall-Heath opened the scoring in the opening quarter on a short touchdown run by Alex Solis to take a 7-0 lead.
North Mesquite countered early in the second when Ta'Varius Luke had a 13-yard scoring run to tie the game at 7-7.
The Hawks surged back ahead on a touchdown by Rico Henderson, but the Stallions answered again almost immediately when Corey Hunt broke free for a 72-yard scoring run to tie the game at 14-14 going into halftime.
Scoring continued to be hard to come by in the second half, but Rockwall-Heath was able to surge to a 21-14 advantage on a pass from Chase Schultz to Rashad Jackson, and this time, North Mesquite did not have a counterpunch.
