Rowlett's playoff streak in jeopardy after loss to South Garland
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
It took Rowlett nine long years to make the playoffs and it liked the experience so much it has not missed out on the postseason party since.
But that seven-year streak is in serious jeopardy now after a 48-28 loss to South Garland on Thursday at Homer B. Johnson Stadium.
Rowlett is now 1-6 overall and 0-3 in 10-5A play while the surging Colonels (6-2) maintain their place atop the district standings with a 4-0 record.
That is a road they would prefer not to have to travel, but they have no choice now.
Rowlett actually got off to just the start it wanted to when Carson Hyles threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Chris Heath to take a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, South Garland was about to take control of the remainder of the half to build an insurmountable lead.
It took less than a minute for the Colonels to respond, as Trey Porter threw a 68-yard touchdown pass to Jerminic Smith to tie the game.
South Garland then surged into the lead when Marquel McNac scored on a 34-yard touchdown run to take a 14-7 lead.
The Colonels continued the onslaught in a 21-point second quarter. The defense came up big with a 32-yard fumble return for a touchdown from Stephan Greenwood and Porter than threw scoring passes of 26 and 12 yards to Byron Austin to stake them to a 34-7 lead at halftime.
Rowlett finally broke the scoring string when Hyles threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Hogan, but South Garland immediately came back with a 22-yard scoring run from McNac to make it 41-14.
Rowlett made one final charge in the fourth quarter, as Hyles threw touchdown passes of six and 22 yards to Jonathan Williams and Heath, respectively, to close to within 41-28.
But any hopes of a miraculous comeback ended when McNac closed the door with a 38-yard run to put South Garland up for good at 48-28.
