Wranglers dominate Forney in 41-7 win
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
The last nine meetings between West Mesquite and Forney had been decided by eight points or less.
In the last fouar seasons, Forney had twice knocked off the Wranglers late in the season to cost them outright district championships.
On Friday, West Mesquite wanted no part of such drama.
West Mesquite improves to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in 10-4A as its sets the stage for its showdown with Poteet next week. The Jackrabbits (4-5) slipped to 3-3 in district play and they must defeat Carrollton Newman Smith next week if they hope to make the playoffs.
The Wrangler defense allowed nothing against Forney, limiting them to just over 100 yards of offense. The Jackrabbits' lone score came on special teams when Marcus White returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown that tied the game at 7-7 after Raashaan Reason had given West Mesquite an early lead with a 9-yard touchdown run.
It was all Wranglers from that point.
Traveon Jones scored on a 14-yard touchdown run and Chason Virgil hooked up with Christian Mitchell on a 53-yard score to give them a 21-7 lead at halftime.
Virgil continued to attack the Forney secondary in the third quarter, throwing a 33-yard touchdown pass to Reason and a 14-yard scoring strike to Akilian Butler to stretch the advantage to 34-7.
West Mesquite tacked on one more score in the final quarter as Jamarie Williams bulled in from a yard out to provide the final 41-7 margin.
