West Mesquite's misery against Highland Park continues as Scots explode in second half
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
In 13 previous meetings, Highland Park has often defeated West Mesquite because it was the better team.
That might be the case again this season, but the Wranglers certainly helped the Scots' cause with five turnovers as Highland Park scored 34 unanswered points to run away with a 41-21 victory on Friday at Highlander Stadium.
The showdown for first place in 10-4A did not materialize into the down-to-the-wire affair many expected, as the Scots outscored West Mesquite 27-0 in the second half to improve to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in district play. The Wranglers slipped to 6-2 and 3-1.
The rest of the half belonged to West Mesquite. Well, almost the rest of the half.
The Wranglers struck back furiously with big plays. They tied the game at 7-7 when Chason Virgil hooked up with William Stanley on a 78-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter.
The defense then got into the act when Nick Akins scooped up a fumble and returned it 75 yards for a score to take a 14-7 lead.
Midway through the second quarter, the Wranglers recorded their longest pass play of the season when Virgil completed a pass to Christian Mitchell and he did the rest for a 95-yard touchdown to put West Mesquite in control with a 21-7 lead.
The Wranglers had designs on extending that advantage late in the first half, but Robert Mencke intercepted a pass and returned it 60 yards for a touchdown that made it 21-14 with just 35 seconds left before halftime.
The play gave Highland Park momentum it would not relinquish.
Late in the third quarter, the Scots tied the game on a touchdown pass from Tuma to Charles Hubbard, and just a couple of minutes later, Tuma scored on a 5-yard keeper to give them a 28-21 lead.
The Scots poured it on in the fourth quarter, getting touchdowns from Vallera and Tuma to pull away for a victory that gave them sole possession of first place in 10-4A.
