LHS flash mob provides valuable learning

Published: Tuesday, November 13, 2012 12:04 PM CST
This semester, juniors and seniors in Rob Borenstein's sociology class at Lewisville High School (LHS) were charged with a task.

"The objective was to make students see how people react when the norms of society are violated. To make it a real-time learning experience, I asked them to come up with something that violates the norm of society," Borenstein said. "Honestly, I facilitated and the students took over the project. It was 95 percent their idea."

The class decided on a flash mob. As luck would have it, LHS Farmerette dance team captain Catherine Moxley was part of the class. Moxley choreographed and taught the routine to three of Borenstein's classes. Needing some assistance to activate the cafeteria's sound system, LHS Assistant Principal Will Skelton was recruited to ensure Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" blared at just the right time during block lunch, when the cafeteria was crowded with students. But he didn't get off that easily, Skelton also learned the routine and was part of the flash mob.

"When we started, other students and teachers eventually joined in and it turned into a great experience for all," Borenstein said. "I've never seen my students so excited about a project and engaged in their learning. It was one of the highlights of my career."

As a result of this project, Borenstein's classes, and the entire student body learned how people react when certain norms of society are violated. In this case, it was a positive experience that brought together students and staff.
