Rex Michael “Mike” Miller has been named general manager and publisher of Star Local Media and its 14 area newspapers, websites and digital media.
Miller replaces Roger Will, who will be working with Arizona Interactive, a subsidiary of 1013 Communications, the parent company of Star Local Media. Miller currently serves as the publisher of the Ahwatukee Foothills News in Phoenix and was named the 1013 Communications Publisher of the Year for 2011.
In addition to being the publisher of the Ahwatukee Foothills News, he is the operations director for 1013 Arizona, overseeing the company's physical assets in Ahwatukee, Tempe, Chandler, the West Valley and Tucson.
“We place tremendous value on our position in the communities we serve to provide the best local news and advertising available across all our media platforms,” said Randy Miller, president of 1013 Communications. “Mike brings an exceptional background to his new role, which will foster the kind of growth and development that will benefit our communities tremendously. Having Mike's full-time local leadership of all our products will be critical for us to continue to build on our relationships in the communities with our readers and advertisers.”
Mike Miller received a degree in political science from the University of Wisconsin, where he was also a four-year varsity athlete on the school’s rowing team. He went on to serve in the U.S. Navy and was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for serving as chief of public affairs at Vance Air Force Base in Enid, Okla.
He is currently a Lieutenant Junior Grade in the Individual Ready Reserve of the United States Navy Reserve.
Mike Miller has been active in the Ahwatukee community, where he serves on the board of directors for both the Ahwatukee Foothills Chamber of Commerce and the Ahwatukee Family YMCA. He has also worked in the circulation departments at the Colorado Daily in Boulder, Colo., and at the Telluride Daily Planet in Telluride, Colo., where he served as circulation manager.
“I can't wait to learn more about each of the communities we serve and in turn how we can grow together,” Mike Miller said. “My wife, Lobelia, and I have already fallen in love with the sense of community and family here, especially since we are expecting our first child. We know that this is going to be the perfect place to start our family.”
