Oct. 12 was the end of the first six-week grading period. For students, that means progress reports. For Independence Elementary, it means a $1,000 cash prize as the school was named as Vista Ridge Mall's first A+ Rewards Honor Roll school.

"We are pleased to announce that Independence Elementary in Lewisville is our first A+ Rewards winner and will receive $1,000," said Leanne Lowry, general manager of Vista Ridge Mall. "The six-weeks Honor Roll program is an addition to A+ Rewards where we award $20,000 in cash prizes over the course of a school year. This year, during each of the first five grading periods, each school that fulfills certain criteria will automatically be entered to win. Soon after each grading period ends, we will draw, at random, one school that will be awarded $1,000. Independence was our first winner."

Formerly called My School's Cool, A+ Rewards is Vista Ridge Mall's newly revamped community program that makes it easier for schools to win a portion of the total $20,000 in cash prizes. The prizes will be awarded to participating schools during the 2012-13 school year. A $1,000 prize will be awarded to a qualifying school during each of the five grading periods.

"It was a wonderful surprise to hear that Independence was Vista Ridge Mall's first A+ Rewards winner and that we will receive $1,000," said Theodora Winslow, principal of Independence Elementary School. "We will put the dollars to good use here at Independence and look forward to competing in A+ Rewards the rest of the school year."

Schools participating in A+ Rewards will compete for the highest accumulation of points during the school year to earn a share of the remaining $15,000 cash reward.

Public and private schools located in Lewisville or Coppell independent school districts are eligible to enroll in A+ Rewards. Each school participating signs a pledge committing to program participation. The pledge will promote honesty and accountability on the part of the participating schools.

Receipts from retailers at Vista Ridge Mall dated Aug. 1 to May 12 can be submitted for points. At the end of the 2012-13 school year, Vista Ridge Mall will award cash prizes totaling $15,000 to the schools with the most points per student. Total points earned by a participating school will be divided by student enrollment in order to allow all schools, regardless of their size, to compete fairly.
