Veteran's Memorial Bridge dedication to be held Sunday
By Andrew Snyder, asnyder@starlocalnews.com
Little Elm will gather Sunday to dedicate the Veteran's Memorial Bridge in a ceremony scheduled for 2 p.m. at 1637 Witt Road. The bridge crosses Cottonwood Creek and connects King Road and Eldorado Parkway.
The town of Little Elm and American Legion Post 182 have worked in conjunction to put together a Veterans Day program that includes a 21-gun salute, a wreath lay for missing and fallen soldiers, a full flag ceremony and the raising of an American Flag by two fire trucks. The event will also include U.S. representative Michael Burgess as the keynote speaker. Burgess won re-election by a decisive margin Tuesday.
Event organizers expect between 250-300 people to attend.
The city originally planned to name the bridge after one particular veteran but couldn't settle on a name, according to American Legion Post 182 commander Kevin Crye. He said that veterans around the area petitioned them to instead make the name a tribute to all those who've served.
“We love the fact that the town was willing to name it Veteran's Memorial Bridge,” Crye said, adding that he's been working on the ceremony since July. “The town really cares about its veterans and really cares about its people.”
The bridge will provide a solution to the frequent road closures caused by water levels in Cottonwood Creek, which has a low elevation.
Parking for Sunday's ceremony will be available at Brent Elementary School, which is located at 500 Witt Road. For more information on the ceremony, contact Sandy Devault at 214-975-0471 or sdevault@littleelm.org.
