DISTRICT 11-5A VOLLEYBALL: Rowlett tops Sachse, holds on to top spot

By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com

Rowlett entered Friday's rival match with Sachse riding an eight-game winning streak, but any time the two teams get together, it is a battle.

Especially when the Mustangs were trying to not only solidify their own playoff standing, but keep their outside hopes of a district title in sight.

The two teams waged a furious first game, with Rowlett finally prevailing after 64 points. The Mustangs finally looked to be back on track in game three, but the Eagles reestablished control and went on to a 33-31, 25-22, 13-25, 25-13 victory at Sachse High School.

Rowlett improved to 9-1 in 11-5A and maintained its half-game lead over Naaman Forest, which swept North Garland on Friday.

Both the Eagles and Rangers had already clinched playoff berths.

Sachse stands at 6-3 and will clinch a postseason spot with one more victory, but it is still trying to hold off Lakeview (5-4), which sits a game back.

The Patriots are in a tough spot. If they hope to overtake the Mustangs for the third spot, they will have to move ahead of them in the standings after Sachse swept the season series. That is no easy chore considering Lakeview must take on the district leaders with matches at Rowlett on Tuesday and against Naaman Forest on Tuesday.

If the Patriots falter in those matches, it opens the door for Garland, which is sitting at 3-6. The Owls face one-win North Garland on Friday before a tough match against Sachse on Tuesday. But if they can hang within striking distance, it has a season-ending clash with Lakeview that could have a playoff berth on the line.

The Mustangs will also host Naaman Forest on Tuesday, and with a win, it can keep its hopes of moving up in playoff seeding alive if the Rangers should falter.

DISTRICT 12-5A VOLLEYBALL: Horn notches pivotal win over Skeeters

The 12-5A volleyball picture is the definition of a two-tier race.

At the top, Rockwall-Heath, Rockwall and Tyler Lee have run away from the pack and secured playoff spots, with the only drama left revolving around who gets what seed.

That leaves one postseason berth to be decided between four teams and they all have a shot with a week-and-a-half left in the regular season.

Horn put itself in the driver's seat for now with a huge 25, 20, 25-14, 25-9 victory over Mesquite on Friday.

That allowed the Jaguars to improve to 3-6 in district play, giving them a one-game lead over the Skeeters.

North Mesquite, which was swept by Rockwall, is in sixth place at 2-8, with Longview sitting in last place at 1-8.

While that might seem clear-cut, there are enough tiebreaker scenarios that could occur during the final three matches that it would make coaches' heads spin.

While the Jaguars do have the edge, they also have the most difficult schedule down the stretch, starting with Tuesday's match against undefeated Rockwall-Heath, which will wrap up sole possession of the district title with one more win.

The pivotal game for Horn is on Friday when it hosts Longview. The Lobos, despite their poor record, could make a charge as all three of their remaining games are against the Mesquite ISD teams they are fighting with for that final spot, starting with Tuesday's match against North Mesquite.

The Stallions are hoping to repeat its earlier win over Longview before their showdown on Friday with Mesquite in a match that could see the loser being eliminated from postseason contention.

DISTRICT 10-4A VOLLEYBALL: Highland Park drops Poteet back into tie for fourth

For one game, Poteet gave undefeated Highland Park all it could handle on Friday night.

Unfortunately for the Pirates, the Scots elevated their game from that point and they were unable to keep up in a 26-24, 25-9, 25-15 loss.

That setback, coupled with Carrollton Newman Smith's win over Terrell, moves the two teams back into a tie for fourth place with 5-6 records with a final match-up still looming on the final day of the regular season.

Still, before that final tilt, both the Pirates and Trojans have business to attend to.

Poteet will be a heavy favorite on Tuesday against winless Terrell, but then must face playoff-bound Carrollton Creekview on Friday.

Newman Smith, meanwhile, will be a favorite in each of its next two matches when it plays at West Mesquite on Tuesday before hosting North Forney on Friday.

The Trojans won the first meeting between the two teams, but even if the Pirates are down by a game in the standings heading into the finale, they can force a tie with a win and the two teams would go into a play-in match.

The other three playoff teams are already set. Highland Park and Creekview will meet on Tuesday for the district title. The Scots will sew up the outright crown with a victory while a Mustang win will forge a tie at the top.

Forney is in third place with an 8-3 mark. If the Jackrabbits were to fold down the stretch, they could be tied by a hot run from either Poteet or Newman Smith, but they would win the tiebreaker over both due to a sweep of the head-to-head series.

North Forney is also not officially eliminated, but they would need a lot of help, having already been swept by Poteet and dropping the first meeting with Newman Smith.

STANDINGS

x-Highland Park 11-0 32-5
