Tripucka receives jersey

Though the selection was made months ago, Allen senior punter Shane Tripucka just recently received his 2013 Under Armour All-America Game jersey as part of the American Family Insurance Selection Tour.

The game is set for Jan. 4, 2013 and will air live on ESPN from Tropicana Field in Tampa, Fla.

Meanwhile, Tripucka is seeking a scholarship.

The 6-foot-3, 205-pounder has talked with Texas A&M, Texas, Texas Tech, Rutgers, North Texas and Bowling Green, and was in College Station Saturday to watch the Aggies play Sam Houston State.

Americans atop CHL

Despite a 4-3 setback last Thursday to the Missouri Mavericks, the Allen Americans continue to lead the CHL standings at 10-2-0 (20 points).

That latest win in that ledger came Saturday.

In front of 4,825 fans at the AEC, the Americans defeated the Tulsa Oilers, 3-1.

Allen got goals from Daryl Bootland, Ryley Grantham Nino Musitelli, who lit the lamp for the first time since returning to the Americans. Musitelli stole the puck at the blue-line and fired past Dan Bakala to set the 3-1 final.

"It was good to see Nino get rewarded," Bootland said. "He's worked so hard and been through so much lately we were all excited to see that puck go in the net."

Steve Silverthorn (7-0-0) picked up the win between the pipes by stopping 24-of-25 shots.

Allen traveled to face Arizona Wednesday night (results not available at press time) and will be on the road against the Sundogs Friday and Saturday.

Nwachukwu hits milestone

Texas A&M senior Uzoma Nwachukwu, an Allen alum, journeyed into unchartered waters during Saturday's win over Sam Houston State.

Nwachukwu became the fourth Aggie receiver in program history to eclipse the 2,000-yard mark in career receiving yards. In Saturday's 47-28 win, the former Eagle led A&M with a career-high 160 yards, topping his previous high of 141 yards as a freshman against Oklahoma State in 2009.

On the year, Nwachukwu has caught 21 passes for 397 yards and five touchdowns.

Winter Games of Texas near

For the eighth year in a row, The Winter Games of Texas (the state's largest multi-sport amateur competition) is coming to Collin County.

The event is set for Jan. 18-20, 2013.

Close to 4,000 athletes and 15,000 spectators, coaches, referees and volunteers are expected to participate in this year's event, which features 13 different sports (basketball, Miracle League Bowling, fencing, figure skating, flag football, gymnastics, ice hockey, martial arts, soccer, swimming, volleyball, table tennis and the 2013 Texas State Weightlifting Championship, which is the latest addition to the annual slate of activities).

While most of the events are taking place in Frisco, the gymnastics portion will be Jan. 19-20 at ASI Gymnastics-Plano West.

Those who medal in basketball, figure skating, gymnastics, soccer, swimming and table tennis advance to the 2013 State Games of America, which are July 31-Aug. 4.

Quest, Cherry named Coach of the Year

Lovejoy's Adam Cherry and Allen's Justin Quest have been named Texas Tennis Association Coaches of the Year for 2011-12.

Cherry won for Class 3A and Quest for 5A.

Both coaches have continued their success into the fall.

Moving up to 4A, Cherry led Lovejoy to an undefeated district regular season, second-place finish at the district tournament and fifth-place showing at regionals.

Quest helped navigate Allen through one of the toughest district in the state with the Eagles falling one victory short of the regional tournament.

"It's nice to get some statewide recognition for our program and these kids," Quest said. "Hopefully it speaks to the consistency we have been able to maintain over the past few years."

Both will be honored next month at the Wilson/TTCA Hall of Fame Banquet.

Landry Award nominations

For the third straight year, North Texas GMC Dealers will present the area's top high school football player with The Landry Award.

The honor recognizes the Metroplex's top high school player. The recipient will be chosen by a voting panel of former coaches and players, media members and local leaders. The Landry Award program will also recognize the Whataburger All-North Texas Team.

Fans can vote at: LandryAward.com.

Five finalists will be announced in November with 2012's official winner named Dec. 6 at a ceremony at the Communities Foundation of Texas.

Hall of Honor nominations

Though the Allen ISD began enshrining people into its Hall of Honor when Eagle Stadium opened, the district is still seeking future nominees.

Candidates must be ex-athletes, employees, teams or supporters of AISD. They must have graduated from Allen at least 10 years ago and demonstrated good character throughout their post-high school athletic career. If a nominee is deceased, a representative of his/her family may accept the honor.

Nomination forms can be found at: allenisd.org.

Nominations should include as much detail as possible to help choose the best candidates. The selection committee will name recipients at an annual AISD Hall of Honor banquet.
