Showing their medal: Golden Grip excels at district championships

Published: Friday, November 23, 2012 7:58 PM CST
After Plano-based Golden Grip Gymnastics' first meet of the year, head coach and owner Evgueni Indioukov said he anticipated the team, "getting better and better during the season."

He was right.

Golden Grip displayed as much over the past several weeks thanks to a plethora of medals won at the Level 4A, 3, 5A and 4P district and state meets.

Level 4A got things started at Metroplex Gymnastics in Allen.

There, Natalie Hardy was able to medal in the all-around after finishing first on vault (9.55). Teammate Erika Almholt reached the platform in the all-around as well thanks to a third-place showing on beam (8.7).

The Level 3 squad has been a powerhouse for the bulk of the 2012 season and the same held true at the district meet from WOGA in Frisco.

Gracie Flores led the team by placing second in an all-around field of 58 gymnasts with a score of 37.8. Flores also won a silver on vault (9.7). Golden Grip got additional top 10 all-around finishes from Gabrielle Wallace and Sophia Flores. That group worked with Plano's Alexa Shelton, Lia Ross, Makenna Malone, Ella Spicer, Brentley Barton, Ananya Chakravarthi, Sally Ismael and Natalie Savarese to take third in the Level 3 large team competition.

Level 5A was at the same venue for their district championships.

Chancey Anderson and Kymberly Davis led the way there with medals in the all-around.

Wrapping up the most recent slate of championship season was the Level 4P North State Meet, which took place at Infinite Bounds in Plano.

As was the case with prior meets, the medals continued to pile up for Golden Grip.

In the Junior A2 division, Anna Ichiba finished fourth in the all-around (37.850) after compiling finishes of second on bars (9.575), fourth on floor exercise (9.65), sixth on balance beam (9.0) and eighth on vault (9.625). In the Junior B3 division, Carolyn Lindberg won dual silver medals for the beam (9.4) and all-around. Plano's Hannah Rhodes found success in the Senior A1 division by placing first on floor (9.65), third on beam (9.6) and third in the all-around (38.075).

And after predicting such success at the start of the year, Indioukov was pleased to see his teams come through in the postseason.

"The girls work hard all season," he said. "They continued to fine tune and improve their performances right up to district championships; I am proud of each of them."
