Curry named state all-star
The rosters have been released for the Texas Girls Coaches Association All-Star Game and Plano West senior setter Abigail Curry has made the cut.
Curry will play for the Class 4-5A Red squad.
Senior athletes are selected by the TGCA Volleyball Committee, which is composed of volleyball member coaches, at their annual meeting. Selections are made from nominations submitted by member coaches.
Curry, a North Carolina signee, has been on the Lady Wolves’ varsity squad for four years.
Americans win pair in Zona
After losing a shootout to Arizona last Wednesday, 3-2, the Allen Americans took the three-game series with 7-1 and 3-2 wins against the Sundogs over the weekend.
The victories keep the Americans atop the CHL standings at 12-2-1 (25 points).
Friday’s win was an all-out blitz as Allen got goals from Brett Skinner (2), Daryl Bootland (2), Scotty Howes, Mike Montgomery and Jamie Schaafsma in a 7-1 triumph. Bootland and Howes each had five-point nights with the former registering three helpers and the latter four.
Skinner’s 20 points is tops in the league among defensemen.
Saturday’s game was significantly closer, but Americans netminder Aaron Dell (5-2) picked up his second win in two nights by turning away 40 of the Sundogs’ 42 shots. Dell has the best goals against average (1.89) and save percentage (.936) in the CHL. Facing a 2-0 deficit, Allen’s offense was provided Saturday via Adam Pineault, Trevor Ludwig and Schaafsma, all of whom lit the lamp in the 3-2 victory.
The Americans and Sundogs will play again at 7:05 p.m. Saturday from the AEC, but not before Allen hits the road to face the Tulsa Oilers at 7:35 p.m. Friday.
Sidekicks improve to 2-0
It was 22 days between the Dallas Sidekicks’ first and second games.
Fortunately for the Sidekicks, they didn’t appear to miss beat as they followed up a 6-2 season-opening home victory over the Harrisburg Heat with a 7-3 road thrashing of the Rio Grande Valley Flash.
Jamie Lovegrove scored the third-fastest goal in franchise history and gave Dallas a lead 23 seconds into the game. The Sidekicks never looked back with additional goals from Renato Pereira, Frank Mbemba, Ricardinho and Carlos Videla (2). Rio Grande Valley also contributed an own goal.
That was more than enough offense for Dallas keeper Sagu, who accounted for 34 saves in the 7-3 win.
Rio Grande Valley and Dallas will play again at 7:30 p.m. Friday with the Flash traveling to the AEC. For fans unable to attend, the game will be broadcast by Norm Hitzges and former Sidekicks head coach Gordon Jago on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel 185.

PCA, JPII players all-state
With the volleyball season complete, the end-of-year awards have started to pour in.
Prestonwood Christian Academy and John Paul II are among the honorees with both teams getting players onto the TAPPS 5A All-State Team.
The Lady Lions led the way following their trip to the state finals with senior Katie Staiger and junior Ashley Morgan both named first team all-state. Junior teammate Haley Wolken made the list as well, named as a second-team selection.
Joining Wolken on that squad was John Paul junior Jennifer Young, who helped the Lady Cardinals advance to regionals this season.
Buescher wins truck title
Plano native James Buescher didn’t finish first Friday night at Homestead-Miami Speedway but no doubt enjoyed the biggest victory of the evening.
Despite placing 13th in the season finale race, Buescher was high enough to secure the outright NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship – his first in four full-time seasons.
“It wasn’t pretty,” Buescher said. “It was a little messy, but we did it. … This is definitely the coolest thing I’ve ever done in racing.”
Buescher’s closest competition in the point standings was Timothy Peters, who finished eight on Friday and just six points behind Buescher overall.
Scream wins 10U fall title
The third time proved to be the charm for the Plano Youth Soccer Association’s Team Scream.
After losing two straight finals, the 10U girls captured the fall title with wins of 4-0, 5-1 and 4-1.
After finishing the regular season at 8-2 (third place), the Scream faced a difficult path to the championship. In the semifinals, the Scream played a team it had not beaten in eight previous attempts, including the past two finals.
But that trend changed and the Scream moved to the championship against the Cheetahs. In the finals, the Scream broke open a 1-1 tie with a hat trick from Lauren Rosas in a four-minute span to take a 4-1 lead and secure the team’s first title.
The Scream was started by Duane Newman when the girls were 3 and 4 years old.
“This just goes to show what can happen if you create a fun, family environment while instilling the basics of soccer,” Newman said.
The Scream will next be in the North Texas Soccer Association's Tournament of Champions.
“We are always pushing the girls to play their best,” said Keith Dlott, Scream assistant coach, “focusing on the foundation and challenging them to improve with every practice and game.”
Taylor Webb Classic approaches
With its first tournament (Rockwall-Heath) in the books, first year-head coach Jay Pryor and the Plano Senior wrestling team continues to look forward to its host tourney, the Taylor Webb Classic.
Named after the Plano ISD wrestling luminary, the tournament is set for Dec. 15.
This is the seventh edition of the event.
Arlington won the 15-team tournament last season with Plano West in second, Plano placing third and Plano East finishing fifth.
