Sunnyvale girls getting ready to defend district title

Published: Friday, November 30, 2012 4:00 PM CST
The Sunnyvale girls basketball team is the two-time defending district champion.

With the bar set high, the Raiders have their sights set on once again winning that crown, but with the new district after the University Interscholastic League realignment last spring, they will be facing new challenges to meet a familiar goal.

"We expect to contend for the district title," Sunnyvale head coach Howard York said. "Although we are in a much tougher district."

Sunnyvale was 24-10 overall last season and 12-0 in district play.

The Raiders have a solid nucleus that makes their goal a realistic one.

Point guard Sheridan Lewis was a first-team all-district selection last season, although she has missed some time recently with an ankle inury.

Andi Morgan is the reigning defensive player of the year in the district while Caila Sims was the newcomer of the year last season.

Sunnyvale also returns Delanee Clark, who was the district sixth man of the year last season, as well as first-teamer Grace Goodhart and second-teamers Olivia Williams and Abby Duck.

The Raiders should have the advantage on many teams with their guard play and their defense, but will look to improve on post play and rebounding as the season progresses.

Sunnyvale is currently 4-2 on the young season and will compete in the Scurry-Rosser Tournament starting on Thursday.

Sunnyvale boys suffer first loss

The Sunnyvale boys basketball team slipped to 4-1 on the season with a 61-50 loss to Crandall on Tuesday.

The Raiders fell into a big early hole and while they rallied late, it was not enough.

Thomas Wendt scored 15 points and Josh Quinn added 13 to lead Sunnyvale.

Sunnyvale will try to defend its title at the Sunnyvale Invitational on Thursday through Saturday before traveling to take on Pinkston on Tuesday.
